  1. Microphone Recognition

For awhile I was using Audio-Technica AT2020 microphone using an XLR to 3.5 mm cable on my Windows 10 Desktop to talk with friends with various programs, namely Twitch, Discord, and Skype. Worked great for a few months, then one day while moving some things around I unplugged it an plugged it back in later that day and immediately noticed something. Before the icon associated with the device in the recording devices list under the sound options resembled a microphone. After unplugging it and plugging it back in, the icon changed to resemble a USB cable. I thought that was odd seeing as how I'm using 3.5 mm, but didn't think much of it until I found out the device no longer worked for either Twitch or Discord. Both programs detect the device, but no sound is picked up. It did, however, continue to work for Skype, though only for a time. I have no idea if the icon is relevant, but if Windows is recognizing it incorrectly I wonder if that is causing the problem. The icon has since changed again so it no longer looks like a USB cable, though it's not the original icon either and now Skype does not detect the device. Twitch and Discord do detect the device, but it still doesn't work. If I enable playback in sound settings I can hear the device fine. The microphone is definitely able to pick up sound. Just won't work for voice chat. Since messing with the cables seems to be what caused the problem I have replaced all of the cables for this device.

TLDR: Mic worked, unplugged mic, plugged it back in, mic stopped working. Windows seems to be recognizing it differently as it changed to a USB icon in recording devices list even though it's 3.5 mm.

    Hardware:

    • Audio-Technica AT2020
    • XLR to 3.5 mm cable

    Software:

    • Twitch - Detects device, does not pick up sound
    • Discord - Detects device, does not pick up sound
    • Skype - Does not detect device anymore, previously did pick up sound when it could detect
    • Playback - Sound is clear

    Things I've Tried:

    • Switching to a different port on the desktop
    • Uninstalling and reinstalling drivers
    • Replaced all cables

    :)
