Stuck in Automatic Repair = inadvertently changed C: drive path?

Not sure if I am posting to the right place, but here goes:

I have gone and screwed up my son’s computer:

An external drive on my own computer stopped being recognised = anyway I think it just packed up altogether, but because it had data on it I wanted to try and see if I could somehow save my data, and just check if the drive maybe worked on another computer. So using a SATA Docking station (2,5 & 3,5 SATA I/II/III HDD/SSD) I connected this to my son’s computer (with the external drive inserted/removed from the housing) .

Anyway the external drive did not show up at all (not recognised) and I messed about trying different things = and not sure now all the things I tried = but somehow I messed up the system on my son’s computer and the only thing it will now do is start the Lenovo Automatic Repair.

I had loads of problems with this Automatic Repair because neither the mouse nor keyboard would function, so I just got stuck in this screen unable to select one of the two options (Shutdown/Advanced options). The only thing I could do was power off. The keyboard functioned to get into BIOS, but would not function in the Automatic Repair window.

After a long while I found out that a wireless mouse would work and I was finally able to select Advanced Options.

BUT nothing works in Advanced options = not even System Restore or Reset!

In system restore I get the option of different Restore Points but I am unable to select any = I get a warning sign telling me = I must always restore the drive that contains Windows!

Here is the thing: I am not sure but I think just before this trouble I might have restarted my son’s computer with this external drive Docking station connected!

So have I inadvertently changed something (so the c: windows drive is not being accessed?) = and if so what = and how to fix it?

Or have I screwed up the drive on my son’s computer?

(Drive in son's computer is 1TB Seagate Barracuda/External drive has no name but 2000 GB serial ATA)

    :)

    Hello Artemis,

If the" Scanning and repairing drive (CStuck in Automatic Repair = inadvertently changed C: drive path? :)" stuck, you may wait for some time and check if there's any progress.

If there's no progress after an overnight, we can perform a Startup/Automatic repair using the Media Creation Tool.

To get started, let's create an installation media for Windows 10 (via USB) through this
    link.

Once we have the bootable USB, please follow these steps:

    • Insert the installation USB and boot Windows 10 from it.
    • Select Language, Time and currency format and the Keyboard or input method.
    • Click Next.
    • Click Repair your computer, and select Troubleshoot.
    • Click Advanced option.
    • Select Automatic Repair, and select operating system.

    Update us on the outcome.

    repairing drive c

The part of process that you are in when updating Windows is the check disk (CHKDSK), the system is checking your drive for errors.

Are you still having the issue and stuck at Scanning and repairing drive process?

As a workaround, you can follow these steps to bypass the CHKDSK process:

    • Hold down the power button for 4 seconds.
    • The PC will reboot.
    • You will get stuck again on the process, repeat step 1.
    • You will get a message "press any key to bypass the chkdsk."
    • Press any key and it will continue on the update process.

Let us know if you need further assistance.
