Windows 10: Broken start menu & ms-settings:personalisation-background

On my surface laptop the start menu stopped working. Along with some microsoft default apps. I don't get any icons when I swipe from the left or right on the screen and I cant tap the windows key to open the menu. The settings menu cannot also be accessed.


I can find all the apps I need by looking in ProgramFiles(x86) folder and creating shortcuts from there but many parts of the OS cannot be accessed. This happened after I was trying to wipe the drive through the Shift+Restart safe boot and drive wipe options.


I have tried

sfc /scannow

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth


I am on windows version 1809.

Windows 10 Personalise Taskbar > Start menu broken

After a fresh windows 10 install,

after configurating the time to my timezone and syncing the time, made the personalise taskbar > start menu broken.

none of the option works anymore, like show or hide app list. Show new apps and suggetion and or frequent used apps.

This issue might occur if there is some system files is corrupt.


To assist you better, please provide us the information below:

• When you say that "I cannot use ms-settingsersonalization-background", have you tried to run the command in the Run box?
• Are you getting any error message?
• Have you made any changes to the computer prior to the issue?

I suggest you to follow the steps below to refer to the suggestion provided in the Microsoft Help Article and also try to change the background image.

Step 1: I recommend you to follow the suggestion provided in the Microsoft Help Article about Start Menu issues and check if it helps.

Step 2: I suggest you to change the background image by following the steps below and check if it helps.
1. Right click on Desktop screen.
2. Then click on Personalize.
3. Choose Background.
4. Then try to change the background settings.

Step 3: I recommend you to make changes in the taskbar settings.

1. Right click on Taskbar.

2. Then click on Settings.

3. Turn on Automatically hide the taskbar in desktop mode.

Start Menu background color customize

Hi,

You can change the background color of the the Start menu on Settings. To do this, follow the steps below:

• Click the Windows logo (Start button).
• Click the gear icon (Settings).
• Choose Personalization.
• Select Colors.
• Under Show color on Start, taskbar, and action center, switch the slider to
  On.
• After switching the slider to On, you can now pick what color you want or you can click the
  Automatically pick an accent color from my background checkbox to make Windows pick the color that complements the color of your desktop background.
