Windows 10 19H1 to change Start menu’s navigation pane behaviour

Windows 10’s next update which is codenamed ’19H1′ will tweak the Start menu behaviour and the changes are available in Windows 10 Build 18282. Microsoft is planning new improvements for the Start menu and while it’s not a big change, it’s still quite noticeable.

Windows 10 might improve the way users interact with the available menus. The side pane or navigation of the Start menu will open if the user hovers over the buttons.

At the moment, the navigation pane has icons but Microsoft is making some changes to the side pane and the icons will automatically expand into a menu when you hover the buttons.

This means that the click won’t be necessary to access the Start menu’s navigation options such as documents and pictures. If you hover over the navigation pane in Windows 10 19H1’s Start menu, it will automatically expand after a short period.

“When you hover over the navigation pane in Start, after a short period it will now automatically expand. This is something that a portion of Insiders have had for a little bit now, and after finding positive results we’re now rolling it out to all Insiders,” Microsoft explains in the changelog of the latest Windows 10 19H1 preview update.

Microsoft says that this feature will arrive with Windows 10 19H1 update early next year and it will also contain other changes that may improve Start menu usability.

    Other Start menu improvements

Windows 10 19H1 update will add a new option to Start that would allow you to unpin a group. In 19H1, Microsoft is also updating the Start and Taskbar jump lists with a touch of Fluent Design. In case you’re unfamiliar, Jump list is the menu which shows up when you right-click on Start or Taskbar elements.

The Start menu is an important Windows feature and it has been the subject of many changes since Windows 8 launch. Every big Windows 10 release updates the Start menu with improvements and additional features.

As Microsoft is working on a new light theme for Windows 10, it’s likely that the company will make more changes to the Start menu and desktop.

The next Windows 10 update ’19H1′ is projected to be finalized in the spring of 2019 and the future preview builds could include more exciting features.

  2. Hide or Show User Profile's Personal Folders in Navigation Pane

Thank you in advance to everyone for your help and time. Hopefully this write-up is succinct. Windows 10 19H1 to change Start menu’s navigation pane behaviour :)
I believe there has to be additional registry modifications to solve this issue.

    Problem:
In the Navigation Pane, specifically regarding the Current User folder tree, a Personal Folder (i.e. 3D Objects, Contacts, Desktop, etc... ) continues to show even after making active the Hidden property for that Personal Folder.

    Expected Results:
Any Personal Folder that is marked "Hidden" in the File/Folder Listings Area should also be hidden in the Navigation Pane specifically within the Current User folder tree.

Steps to recreate the issue: (the following steps assume that the option is deactivated to see hidden folders.)
    1. Open File Explorer
    2. Within Navigation Pane, Right-click over any blank area
    3. Select menu-option "Show All Folders"
    4. Select and Expand the Current User folder tree which is listed as a child object to the "Desktop" folder
    5. Within the File/Folder Listings Area, Right-click on a Personal Folder
    6. Select menu-option "Properties"
    7. Within the new Dialogue window, Select the "General" tab, Select to Activate the Attribute "Hidden", Select the "OK" button
    8. Close File Explorer and then Open File Explorer
    9. Select the Current User folder in the Navigation Pane
    10. Notice the recently-hidden folder is still showing in the Navigation Pane even though it is hidden in the File/Folder Listings Area.

    System Specs:
    • Edition: Windows 10 Home 64bit
    • Version: 1709
    • OS Build: 16299.371
    • Hard Drives: 2 (SSD & Mechanical)
    • C:\ = SSD
    • D:\ = Mechanical

    Current Modifications of System:
    • The %UserProfile% system folder was successfully transferred to D:\ by using Sysprep during Windows Setup. This is the only system folder moved to another drive.

Current Modifications of File Explorer in Navigation Pane: (using Regedit)
    • Hidden = Quick Access
    • Hidden = Libraries
    • Hidden = OneDrive
    • Hidden = Homegroup
    • Hidden = This PC user personal folders

Current Modifications of File Explorer in Folder/File Listing Area:
    • Each unwanted Personal Folder was changed to "Hidden" by Right-clicking the folder and Checking the Attribute checkbox marked "Hidden".

    3rd-Party Software Installed:

    • Classic Shell
    • Mozilla Firefox
    • IObit Driver Booster
    • Macrium Reflect

  4. Windows 10 19H1 to change Start menu’s navigation pane behaviour

Scroll Speed of Navigation Pane in File Explorer

I've set that setting to 3, but the navigation pane only scrolls one line per wheel step. All other applications and even the other panes of the Windows Explorer scroll by the correct amount.

It's very annoying that this explorer behaviour is different between Windows 7 and 10, as there's no obvious justification for that change. And if there is some actual reason (rather than some intern thinking it would be fun to hardcode his own preference
into the Windows codebase), the ratio between normal scrolling and this "Special Explorer Navigation Pane Scrolling Speed" should be configurable somewhere.
