Windows 10: how does file explorer preview pane display PDF documents?

The file explorer preview pane can display thumbnails of PDF documents.


I'd love to know how it does that because I'd like to be able to capture the thumbnail of the first page of PDFs and save the capture to an image format (e.g., jpg, png, tiff, etc).


I'd like to incorporate that functionality in a powershell script that would perform the capture on each PDF file in a directory.

Setting the Preview pane to show or hide in File Explorer will apply to all folders. If you wish to hide the Preview pane in File Explorer, we suggest that you follow the steps below:

• Open File Explorer.
• Tap on View tab.
• Click Preview Pane to view/hide it.

No PDF viewer in File explorer preview pane

Conflicts with the program settings is one of the possible reasons why you are unable to view the PDF preview in the File Explorer Preview Pane. We suggest that you try the troubleshooting steps in this

thread, and go to the post that was provided by Michalis_Georgiou
on October 24, 2017 in the 2nd page, and check if you will still encounter the same issue.

how can i get the preview pane inWindows 10 Explorer to display .pdf files?

When I select a file in Windows 10 Explorer, most files will display a preview in the preview pane. However .pdf files apparently cannot be previewed. Is there a solution?
