Windows 10: Second Monitor suddenly no longer working. Windows 10 updates to blame?

I have been using a second monitor (ASUS VG248) for over a year now, connected to my Laptop (MSI GS60), via cable MiniDisplayport(laptop)->Displayport(monitor).

This morning when I started the laptop, the second monitor showed "No Signal", and I haven't been able to get it working.

I've explored the behaviour and tried to troubleshoot, but there are a few weird bugs that suggest to me this might be a Windows issue.

IMPORTANT NOTE: My laptop's native display has a 48Hz refresh rate, and my second monitor has a 144Hz refresh rate.


This is what I've tried so far:

- Restarting computer, turning off for 30 seconds.

- Unplugging and replugging cable.

- Pressing the Duplicate/Extend display button on my laptop keyboard. Whenever I do this, the laptop screen goes black momentarily, then comes back, and then shortly after the second monitor shows "No Signal" briefly before going blank again.

- Updating drivers for both the Intel HD 4600 graphics and my Nvidia 970M, however windows advises that I already have the best drivers installed for each. Also it doesn't appear these were updated in the last 24 hours anyway.

- Checking Windows Update log - there were updates applied today & yesterday, but none appeared related to display settings.

- Going into Display settings. There's a second monitor shown, but it's greyed out.

- Going into Advanced Display settings. It shows the second monitor as Display 2, correctly listing it as VG248, but inactive - can't access any Display Properties.


OH MY GOD - I JUST FIXED IT, BY UNPLUGGING THE MONITOR FOR 1 MINUTE THEN PLUGGING IT BACK IN AGAIN. Thanks to website below.

Is this in any way a Windows issue then, or is it completely a Monitor issue? (I'm guessing it's a monitor issue...)

Ah well, I figure I might post this anyway seeing as I've written it, and it might help Microsoft answer questions about this in future!

Windows Update suddenly hangs?

Windows Update is suddenly hanging for some reason... I went and downloaded and installed the first bunch of updates, restarted when asked, and now when I go back to windows update I just get the window with a white box forever. Reboot and it still does it. This happens to be on my main machine, running windows 7.

I've also noticed when I reboot it says configuring windows update, step 3 of 3, 47%. Maybe it somehow skipped something and is screwed forever?

 

I accidentally hit the update button instead of postpone and now my second monitor does not work.

I suggest you to unplug the cable from the monitor and connect to the second monitor, and check if it works.

Also, suggest you to follow the below steps, and check if it helps.
1. Press Windows + X, and select Device manager.
2. Check if the second monitor is listed under Monitor.

Second monitor no longer works after updating to Windows 10 1709

This does nothing, I had to go back to 1703 in order to get my second monitor to work properly again......
