  1. My External Monitor on Windows 10 turns off randomly

I have been reading about this problem and the majority of complaints relate to a bad VGA cable. I have an HDMI cable and this illness started about two or three months ago. I imagina after windows updates.

Could you please guide me as to what should I do to terminate this behavior ?

    :)

Windows 10 Turns Off external monitor screen randomly

I have a Windows 10 64-bit clean installation on Lenovo Thinkpad T420. It has these graphic cards:

    • internal Intel HD Graphics 3000, driver version: 9.17.10.4229 - no new version found using Intel Update utility
    • nVidia NVS 4200M, driver version: 10.18.13.5445 or 10.18.13.6191 - it does the same for both versions
When using external monitor screen connected with VGA (all the time) it randomly:

    • Makes a device disconnected sound
    • Turns-off the external monitor (no-signal)
    • Immediately afterwards makes a device connected sound
    • Turns-on the external monitor and everything works as before
The whole process takes about 10 seconds. It does this randomly - about twice an hour - even
while using the computer (it happened once during writing this post) and it doesn't matter what applications are running (web browser vs. spreadsheets vs. gaming). Sometimes it does this twice even a few seconds apart.

It is not hardware related because all the monitor cables are tightened and even when loosened and wiggled the problem is not present.

What I have already tried using some advices from the internet:

    • Disabling the external nVidia graphic card in Device Manager didn't help.
    • It is not related to YouTube videos (flash?) - it does this even after startup when no application is started.
    • It is probably not related to f.lux (f.lux) - it does this even when f.lux is not started.
    • Disabling the internal Intel graphic card in Device Manager might have helped - I didn't experience the problems for a day, but I can't run some applications with external graphic card only so this is not a permanent solution.
The problem is very annoying and effectively kills all concentration when working on something and the monitor turns off. I'm thinking about going back to Windows 7.

What else can I do to debug the error to solve it?

external monitors switch off randomly - possibly connected to Skype for Business usage?

    Hi Robert,

It is possible that you're experiencing issues with your external monitors due to corrupted or outdated drivers. To assist you better, I'd like to gather more information:

    • Are you using the same device when connecting your laptop to your external monitors?
    • Have you tried updating your drivers?

Meanwhile, if not, I suggest that you follow the steps in this article about updating drivers in Windows
    10.

Let us know if you need further assistance.

Windows 10 Turns Off external monitor screen randomly

This is very interesting. I had this exact same issue. My setup is a HP Spectre Notebook 13-V004tu Core i7 with

Intel HD Graphics 520, which I have connected to a BenQ RL2455 24" external monitor via HDMI, and
    Windows 10 Home 64-bit.

At the time I purchased the Notebook, I knew it had only USB-C/Thunderbolt connectors, so I bought an official HP USB-C to HDMI single-wire adapter so I could connect it to my monitor with no issues. Upgraded to Windows 10 Anniversary Edition, no issues.

A few weeks (and probably quite a few updates) later, the issue raised its ugly head! I'm going to cut a very long story short, but I tried everything to fix the issue without success. I tried another monitor, changed HDMI cables, drivers, etc., - same problem.

Frustrated, and to rule out hardware, I booted up a live version of Fedora Linux. It worked fine on the external monitor. I tested it for hours - solid as a rock. As soon as I went back to Windows 10, the problem was back.

A couple of days later at work, I was using an HP Elite X2 which had an HP USB-C Dock providing power and the Ethernet connection, but it also has integrated DisplayPort and HDMI connectors. I thought to myself,
    I wonder if...

I borrowed the dock, brought it home and connected it up to my Notebook and monitor. Problem gone!!

So I did a little research and (not sure if it would be a waste of money) promptly purchased a

moshi USB-C Multiport Adapter (here) which has an integrated HDMI connector. I think this was intended for a MacBook, but the packet says "Connect
any USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 laptop to an external Monitor or TV". I connected it up and voil ! I haven't had the problem since!! I'm a happy chappy!

I'm glad you resolved this issue by replacing the VGA cable, minscaboo. I believe your laptop has a DisplayPort interface. I'm interested to
know if you tried that during your testing. Anyway I'm posting this in case it helps others.

    Regards,

    Gerry
