  1. 08.19.2020 Windows 10 update bricked my PC

Restarted my PC early this morning. It forced an update. I thought that was odd, as it forced an update on me a couple of days ago, but the only choices I had were "Update and restart", or "Update and shut down." I chose "Update and restart".

After the update, it went to restart. It got to the Gigabyte BIOS screen and beeped. 30 seconds later it beeped again. 30 seconds later it beeped again, then the screen went black.

I have been on the phone and on text support with Microsoft all day. It has been a nightmare, but I don't want to dwell on the grief and drama, I just need my computer fixed.

I have tried the "Hold the power button in until it shuts off, wait 30 seconds, then press the power button and as soon as the first thing comes up on screen, hold the power button in until ti shuts off - repeat 3 times. Nothing, despite multiple tries.

I have also tried to get to the BIOS by holding the power button until the computer shuts off, waiting 30 seconds, then pressing the power butting and hitting F12 over and over and over. Nothing, despite multiple tries.

I was told I was going to have to wait for a callback from a supervisor, that he or she could roll the update back or do a fix and repair on Windows 10. Since I don't have Windows 10 discs, I was told I would have to have a working, internet-connected computer and a flash drive so I could download files the supervisor would give me. I went out and bought a used laptop and waited for the call, which was promised "in under an hour".

Four hours later I called back and after a lot of grief got a call from a supervisor. One of the rudest people I've ever dealt with. Wouldn't listen to me describe the problem, wouldn't send me the files and try to roll the update back. Nothing. He insisted it was a BIOS problem, not a Windows problem and hung up on me.

Here's the thing, though. In 2017 I had the EXACT same thing happen. A windows update bricked my computer ... it went to the BIOS screen and then nothing but black screen.

I dealt with Microsoft support for over two days trying to get it fixed. Finally, the last guy says "There's nothing I can do, I'm going to set you up an appointment at your local Microsoft store!" I took it there, the guy says "Hold on while I take a look", and it was fixed in less than 15 minutes! No lost data, no having to reload all my programs.

The problem now is the Microft store is closed down. I don't know what to do.

I called a computer repair shop I've dealt with in the past. He says it'll be 3 days before he can get to it. I've already lost a day's work with this, I can't afford to lose 3 more. There's a lot of proprietary software on my computer. It would take me days to load that software on this laptop and get everything setup properly. Then there's the data. I do a full-system backup every week, but I would lose All the data from Sat-Tue.

Can anyone help or offer suggestions?

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks

    :)

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

Microsoft to make Windows 10 updates mandatory

Well, at the moment at least, you can choose to defer upgrades. Under Settings > Windows Updates > Advanced options you need to check the box labeled "Defer upgrades". What does that do? Good question. The answer I've found might illuminate it to a degree.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/defer-upgrades-in-windows-10

I hear this only applies to Pro and Enterprise editions. But I can't verify that.
