Windows 10: 0x80004005 error when unzipping password protected archive in windows 10

I am trying to open a password protected zip archive that I downloaded through a secure connection. I trust the source of this file, however, Windows 10 will not allow me to unzip this file.

This is a brand-new Windows 10 computer, set up today.

I am trying to open a password protected zip archive that I downloaded through a secure connection. I trust the source of this file, however, Windows 10 will not allow me to unzip this file.





When I look at the permissions for this file, this is what I see:





So it seems that Windows gives ownership to an account that does not even exist on my computer!

I have tried editing the permissions, I have tried copying the file to a location on my computer that everyone can write to, it obstinately keeps giving me the above error. This problem does not occur in Windows 7 (the computer I upgraded from, and I just
tried, that computer works just fine). This problem occurs in all browsers, it is not just related to Edge.

How can I ensure that password protected zip archives that are downloaded under my account name can be unzipped and have the unzipped file written to a location of my choice?

Unzipping password protected Zip files issue

Some more testing : extraction using standard Windows only works if the zip is created using ZipCrypto encryption method.





If you chose AES-256 then while 7-zip will open it, Windows built in extractor fails with this error :





A bit of googling indicates WinRAR uses AES encryption so I'd suggest using 7-zip to compress/password protect your zip using the ZipCrypto encryption method.
