Windows 10: 0x80070422 error in Windows update service, and the Wifi symbol did not show up.

Encountered this issue when I ran a Windows update yesterday.

I actually solved this, but didn't find the solution here. All related threads were locked, so I thought I'd share what I found out.


The fix was actually the "Solution 4" from this site.

Open "Services" windows key -> type "run", hit enter -> type "services.msc", hit enter again.


This should open the list of your windows services. Look for "Network List Service". Right click it, and select properties.


Not entirely sure what is the correct settings, but it was set to status type: Disabled, and it was not running.

I changed it to status type: Manual, clicked "apply", and then clicked "Start".


After doing this, the Wifi icon came back on my toolbar, and the windows update stopped reporting error 0x80070042.


Hopefully this is useful for someone else as well.

A simple solution but one that works in most circumstances!

1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.

2. In the list of services, right-click Automatic Updates, and then click Properties.

3. In the Startup type list, click Automatic, and then click Apply.

4. If Service status is set to Stopped, click Start, and then click OK.

5. Right-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service, and then click Properties.

6. In the Startup type list, click Manual, and then click Apply.

7. If Service status is set to Stopped, click Start, and then click OK.

Windows Update Error 0x80070422

Open admin Command Prompt and execute the following command:

Restart Windows and see if the Windows Update service starts correctly.

If you receive Access Denied error when running the above command, try resetting the Windows Update service registry key permissions to default.

Download RegASSASSIN from Malwarebytes and run it.
Input the following registry key:

In RegASSASSIN, don't forget to UNCHECK the Delete registry key and all subkeys checkbox before clicking on the Delete button.

You can use RegASSASSIN utility from Malwarebytes to reset the registry permissions for this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv





Now, see if you can change the Windows Update service Startup type using the Services MMC or Command Prompt.
