  1. 10 mins of black screen after password input/logon?! Help!

Alright, so I just updated windows to 20h2. The install took a long time, but then when it finally finished I was greeted with my normal log in screen. I have 2 users on this PC (relevant later). I put in my pin code, and saw “welcome”. Then my desktop loaded, and after a few seconds, it goes to a black screen and I can’t see or do anything. However, when I press the windows key, the start menu comes up. But if I click anything, or do CTRL ALT DEL and task manager, it opens but behind the black screen. I cannot click anything. If I ALT TAB I can see the windows that are open but none of them are in the foreground when I click them.

The second user on my PC loads perfectly fine. It’s just mine.

I’ve noticed though, that if I wait and stare at the black screen for about 8-10 minutes...the desktop loads and everything is absolutely normal.

    Please help!

Black screen after logon fixed, sort of, but...

    Hey guys,

I upgraded Windows 8.1 to Win 10. Everything seemed to go okay, and the Win 10 logon screen appeared. But when I logged into my existing account, all I got was a black screen with a movable mouse pointer.

I thought that running Windows Update might fix it—but I couldn't do that because I couldn't see anything.

I tried booting to Safe Mode, but got the same black screen.

I tried various suggestions I found online. What finally worked was manually creating a new user account from a command line. Here's how, in case anyone's interested (hey, I'm a technical writer, I can't help it):

    1. At the logon screen, hold Shift, click the "power" icon in the lower right corner, then click Restart.
    2. On the screens that appear, clicked Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart.
    3. When the list of startup options appears, press the number shown for Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
    4. At the command prompt, type the following, then press Enter: net user test 12345 /ADD
    5. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete for the options screen, then click Restart. (Or you may have to click Log Off, then click Restart from the Win 10 logon screen—but don't hold Shift this time.)
    6. Log onto the new "test" account (password 12345).
I now have a new account with a "virgin" Win 10 desktop. I've made it an Administrator account by opening User Accounts and, when prompted, entering my previous account's password. (To do this, your previous account must have been an Administrator account.)

I know I can now manually copy everything over from my previous account, then spend a whole day reconfiguring Windows and all my apps. However, I suspect that some of my previous account's settings are just conflicting with Win 10 and preventing it from starting.

Is there a way I can use the new account to change my previous account's settings (e.g. graphic options, startup tasks)? That'd sure be a lot easier. Thanks, A.

Windows 10 boot with 2 min black screen before logon

    Hi Gupa10

    Update 09/17/15, See PS2 below

Thanks for your help. I have tried the above options without success and now I am stuck...

    First:

_ With startup on safemode as "minimal", it boots fast (25") till logon prompt and no black screen. (All OK but for Audio and WiFi)

_ With only MS services, all other services turned off including security it has the same original issue ( 2 min of black screen)

    BUT

Now I have an other problem. With MSCONFIG I have turned off some more MS services and now windows can't start... It gets to the logon prompt, I enter the password then the dots turn for a few seconds and it freezes. From the look of the screen resolution,
it was starting in safemode. I haven't been able to "Repair", even booting with the WIN10 USB media, the Repair option says it can't do it.

With the command prompt I have found a log file SrtTrail.txt that says "Operating System Version is incompatible with Startup Repair"... But it is the same media I used to do the windows 10 upgrade?

How can I reset/restore the msconfig file? (09/14/2015)

    Please Help.

    Thanks John

PS: Since writing the above, I have done a System Restore, It reported a failure and now it starts to boot in safe mode, after entering the password I see the SafeMode desktop with the System Restore windows saying that it was successful but freezes there,
mouse or any input. I have power down and tried a few times, it is always stuck there. (09/15/2015)

PS2: As I haven't been able to restart, I have reverted to Win7Pro, Updated all drivers and re-installed WIN 10, did all the current updates without any problem but the Boot time is the same, 90 Sec of black screen. (09/17/2015)

Black Screen Isuue in Window 10

    Hi kashish,

I would appreciate you for trying troubleshooting steps.

To understand the issue better, I request you to answer few questions:

    • Does black screen appear when you before user login’s or after user has logged in ?
    • Does black screen appears when you lock your pc?
This problem occurs because of a change in the behavior of Win Logon and Logon UI. This change introduces the potential for the deadlock.

I would also suggest you to install all the updates available for the system and check if it helps.

    Follow the Below steps:

    • Type settings in the Search area on the taskbar and select Settings
    • Select Update and Security.
    • Click on Windows Update and select Check for Updates

Keep us posted with the status of the issue. We’ll be glad to assist if you need further assistance.

    Thank you
