    10 upgrade on non-compatible laptop

I am looking at a laptop for a fellow student. He upgraded from 8.1 to 10 shortly after 10 became available. Recently it was running slow and shuts off sometimes. Fan vent was clogged. CPU temp a little too high. First of all there are no drivers for Windows 10 from Toshiba. This laptop is not on their compatibility list.

I was running ccleaner and noticed its taking a long time. I looked at the CPU and Ram usage and CPU is at 7% and RAM at 49%. Then I noticed the speed of the CPU is at 1.2GHz with a Max speed of 2.6GHz. Every now and then it will jump to 2.3GHz for a second or two, then back down to 1.2 or 1.3GHz. Could this have anything to do with the 10 upgrade? Will not having the drivers for 10 create a performance issue? I think the laptop needs to go back to 8.1 but I need input from above my level (very low).

    Toshiba Satellite P855-S5102
    Intel Core i5-3230M CPU @2.6GHz
    4G RAM Single Channel DDR3 @ 798MHz (11-11-11-28)

Ccleaner is still running through Edge. Been doing it for 20 minutes and still at 0% progress which is why I posted.

    :)

Windows 7 to Windows 10 Upgrade "Disk Drive Probblems"

I am having this exact same problem with our Acer Aspire 751-7422.

Microsoft said that all of the hardware in my laptop was completely compatible for a Windows 10 upgrade but once upgraded the
Optiarc DVD RW AD-7585H doesn't function. Itunes cannot see it, VLC cannot see it. I've found nothing that can see it despite the fact that Device Manager has it listed and says
under properties that this "device is working properly"

Not having a working CD/DVD drive on this laptop is NOT an option. I would have never upgraded if Microsoft had not said that the laptop was fully compatible.

Please either provide a solution to make the drive funtional or explain how to downgrade back to Windows 7. Really frustrated right now that Microsoft pushed us to upgrade, promised compatibility and
now a major function of the laptop is non-functional.

Most W8/8.1 drivers should work in W10 too. Seems like upgrade didn't go thru as expected so a clean install of W10 would probably fix problems. If it's connected by wire while installing and internet is available it should pick up drivers automatically.

Thanks for the reply. The reason ccleaner was taking forever was there was about 7G of cleaning to do. Most of it on Edge, Temps, and downloads. Removed most manually and then ran it again and all is well. Laptop working OK for now but I suggested that he go back to 8.1 if he continues to have issues since no drivers are available from Toshiba.

This is a common feature with newer CPUs. This is a feature designed to reduce power consumption and reduce heat buildup, both serious concerns in laptops. When CPU usage is low it is run at less than rated speed, thus reducing power consumption. When usage is higher the CPU goes to full speed to meet the demand.

Not having proper drivers can cause a variety of problems, performance and otherwise. Most Windows 8.1 drivers will work. But how well?

Clean installs tend to be less troublesome.

I like clean installs as well. This way I control what is loaded on the PC/laptop. FYI- later I checked CPU temp and it was borderline. Sometimes it would cross the line. Opened it up and found hair/dust ball blocking the exhaust. Cleaned it out and seems to make a difference on performance. Returned to fellow student and he says all is working fine.

Thanks for the info on the CPU usage. I was not aware of that. This is why I like these forums. I learn sooo much. Sometimes I feel I learn more here than in class.
