100% disk usage and unable to open .msc, e.g services devicemanager

    Hi, Just need some help
Basically i am unable to open any applications that end in .msc such as services or device manager, it comes up saying that i cant to open mmc.exe even though i am administrator, would really like some help and can specify more thoroughly if needed.
And onto another issue i have is that my computer seems, to be running extremely slowly and always at 100%, i have tried stopping the services in task manager such as Wsearch and Superfetch but to no avail, without any programs running it still hits 100%, But it may dip if my computer has been running idle for about an hour, in which case it will be around 1% but after starting steam, google chrome most applications that require data from the HDD it shoots up to 80% upwards, and will take a long time to load anything. Any help would be useful *Smile
    Thanks Sam,

    :)

  2. Issue with Radeon driver after anniversary update EDIT: 100% disk usage too!

Researching the Radeon driver issue has taken a back seat. I've disabled all startup items and the computer boots ok now and is stable BUT current issue is 100% disk usage with the NON BOOT DISK. e.g. I try and run a program which is located on D: drive
(separate physical disk from BOOT disk) and disk usage goes to 100%.

EDIT: disabling superfetch... (service)... let's give it a try... (strange that Windows 10 pre-anniversary builds were not an issue.)

EDIT: reverted back to previous Windows 10 build; Anniversary has introduced 100% disk utilisation for me; Grrrr.

    Disc and Game Issues

Initially, those two services you mentioned and others (e.g. Search Indexer, various ServiceHost...., System Interrupts, etc.) usually go through their 'routine' after booting up. So what you're saying is that your disk is running at 100%, or close to
it, constantly without those processes ever completing? Usually these processes will stop, or at least use up significantly less of your CPU and Disk resources within 15 to 30 minutes from cold boot. Or, are there no processes using any resources, but
your disk usage still shows 100%.

Otherwise, there are many references to this problem, as follows:

Disk usage always at 100% - [Solved] - Windows 10

Hope you can sort it out.

  4. 100% disk usage and unable to open .msc, e.g services devicemanager

Hi Sam. Welcome to the TenForums @HensonVA

I somehow doubt the two are tied together but you never know.

First have you checked the health of your HDD? (CrystalDiskInfo, SeaTools)

    Is Chkdsk reporting any errors?

Next have you run sfc /scannow and if so what were the results?

Have you run a different virus scanner on "Full Scan" against HDD? (Malwarebytes, HitmanPro)

The in place repair / upgrade will likely solve the .msc issue but it would be advantageous to know if some little guest has climbed aboard and that your disk health is reporting clean? For reference here is the tutorial. Please post back answers to questions. I'm sure other members will jump in with their ideas.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Along these lines, if you know exactly when this happened a System Restore may resolve the situation. The forum members also recommend Macrium Reflect to "Image" your system periodically. Free, reliable and a great way to get back to a working system.

If you look in task manager and at the top sort the disk high to low what's using the disk?
