    100% disk usage caused by windows “system” process


    When I am doing basically anything on my computer, all of a sudden the computer stops responding. In task manager it’s the windows process named “system” that’s using very much of the disk and causing 100% disk usage. As I mentioned, this happens completely randomly even with nothing open on the computer. I have tried a lot of things including resetting windows but keeping files but the problem still persists. I have no idea what could be the reason this is happening.The specs of my pc are:CPU: AMD ryzen 5 5600gGPU: AMD radeon RX 6700 XTRAM: 2x 8 gb 3200 hzDisk: Kingston SNV2S 500gb

    Usually, a virus could be the main cause of 100% disk usage. The first step in rectifying the problem is to check your disk usages. You need to open the Task Manager and take a look at your disk usages to identify the programs or applications that are causing
    your hard disk 100% usage. Here's how:

    • Type task manager in the Windows search bar and select the best match.
    • In the Processes tab, look at the disk process to see what is causing your hard disk 100% usage.

    100% disk usage

    The most common cause of 100% disk usage appears to be Superfetch and Prefetch, but there are also other causes. You can try disabling both these features and see if it helps.

    As mentioned above, you can add additional columns to the list of processes by right-clicking on any column header.

    I would suggest adding Disk Reads and Disk Writes from the Process Disk tab

    You should be able to identify which process or processes are heavy disk I/O users.

    Should look like this (when sorted by clicking on a column header) -
