Hi, Im new to the site & have the same problem now since i upgraded to Win 10 Pro today, Ive disabled the normal services, it ran for like 5 mins below 15% CPU runtime then bam, back up too 100%....
I have a Acer E1-531 laptop which is pretty fast with a dual core intel 1.7Ghz cpu & HD Graphics with 4-6gig ram...
Ive also read through most of the posts and saw ive done the same that some members suggested but now im getting tired of electronics ;p

scvhost, searchprotocolhost & rundll also sometimes slow my laptop down soo im lost . . . .

Heres some screen shots included and if anyone has the correct answer as to how to fix this problem, please let me know, thanks in advance

  4. 100% disk usage in Windows 10. Help?

To simplify; I am running 2.3GHZ / 6 gig Ram ; I did EVERYTHING for over 2 months, ( And I have time to work on it continuously),
The solution was to have MS do clean install for me PERIOD !
The online update contained junk for my brand laptop and my specific model. That is why Dell eventually posted that my model should Not be updated ! At least not via online free-be do it yourself.
Clean install was the answer at least for me. And a royal pain. You must save Everything and attempt to reinstall, including programs themselves. TIME CONSUMING and stuff gets lost and jacked up to some degree no matter what. (Example; Some videos would not open no matter what after the rebuild). IF you have a 2nd laptop, consider putting copies of your "good stuff" there as a second backup.
Having said all that, the lap top now is screaming fast ! After a fast boot, 2-7% disk now / CPU 3% -ish / memory 35% but only if using IE.

SSD = Solid State Disk - try searching if you want more:

100% disk usage in Windows 10. Help? [IMG]

First check if your laptop includes one. I can't tell as you haven't completed your system specs.
E.g. look at Disk Drives in Device Manager and look up what's fitted if you don't know.

Here's how you find the answer to your question:

  7. The only thing that comes to mind as an "SSD" is Solid State Drive. Hard drives that are solid state instead of a spinning disk. Computers are made with them but the less expensive do not have that much capacity and conversely the high capacity ones are expensive.
Your computer may see external drives on things you may plug in via usb port as SSD.
If it is your hard drive that is SSD and your on windows ten, it should receive update automatically. Having said that drives also need update from time to time.
Go to control panel > device manager > expand each item one at a time, right click on each expanded item, chose update driver software, chose automatic check on internet; it will then tell you if the driver for that device is "best" or if it found one better, if so click install. recheck after install that it is "best". At some point some drivers that may have updates out there will require a restart, after each restart pick up where you left off. IF YOU DO A CLEAN INSTALL; do this driver manual update for sure after !
B U T.............. This will have zero effect on a windows 10 upgrade that has a deeper problem. I found that many things would fake out the problem for a Short time but only a clean install fixed all and for good.
Microsoft will do the clean install for free and stay with you as they go. Problem is you will loose everything in it, ergo you must go thru saving everything you want to external (something) multiple disk, big flash drive/s, or IMO the best, an external hard drive.
If this is beyond you, and I get that, you need to see who can help you in person with the machine (hopefully ) for free or cheap.
Good luck and remember "Google knows all".

  8. 100% disk usage in Windows 10. Help?

First thing to do to find what type of drive you have > click on the start button >
click Device Manager > Disk drives > it will tell you what type of drive you have in it now.

So, I have been battling 100% usage spikes on my SSD for a few weeks, and with no success repairing the issue. Here is what I tried:

    Disabling Windows Search
    Disabling SuperFetch
    Disabling Non-Essential Services
    Removing All Unnecessary Startup Programs
Changing a System Interrupt Value in the Windows Registry
    Updating all System Drivers
    Updating the BIOS
    Clearing the CMOS
    Updating the BIOS Again
    Updating SSD Firmware
    Running CHKDSK
Running Hirens 10.1 - IBM Drive Fitness Tester
Running an I/O Scanner to see what was being read/written
Formatting and Installing a clean Windows 10 Pro

and on, and on and on. If you found the thread, I have probably tried it with no luck.

Today, however, I found the solution that worked for me:

Check your power settings. I am running a Desktop, and I changed my power settings a few months back to "Balanced". Today I changed them back to "High Performance", and it solved the issue. No more intermittent 100% usage spikes. Very, very frustrating time, so please bump this thread so others can find peace and happiness.

    SSD In question: PNY XLR8 CS2211 240GB

P.S. I had to learn the hard way, PNY has the worst support I have ever seen. I tried for three days to get in touch with them, and some of the phone numbers they have listed on their site do not work. I was unable to reach them. I'll never buy a PNY product again.

Try uninstalling Skype Video by right-clicking on it in the start menu and selecting uninstall and see what happens to your disk utilisation
    *Wink

(And if you still need Skype, use the normal Skype app instead).

  12. Well having disabled a number of services with no solution, I came to this post which looked like it was written by someone who knew what they were talking about. And so it seems. I did what it says here and rebooted and my immediate issues have gone away. I have been suffering blue circle issues for months and yesterday reached virtually unusable and I was showing the 100% all of the time so I can breathe a bit easier. I have 16GB of RAM and set my page sizes as 2934 and 12288. Strictly speaking I should have used 24576 but having read you can have too much RAM and not normally using 8 I decided to go for the lower number. If anybody thinks I'd be better off going for the larger number I'd appreciate your feedback.
I'm not completely out of the mire yet because while it appeared to be running smoothly, I did get a spike of 100% which I walked away from and came back 5 minutes later and all OK. I was running a MacAfee manual scan and given the warnings re anti virus software I am hoping that it was just a glich.
Thanks again for the advice and excellent instructions.

  13. 100% disk usage in Windows 10. Help?

Well thanks for all the help but I'm still not out of the woods. Not so bad but still getting the odd 100% blip especially on startup. I think I've covered just about every suggestion apart from a Windows reload which I am reluctant to do because of the hassle of recreating all of my apps.

Yeah, I was thinking about that. Maybe there would have been some indicators of a failing hard drive in Event Viewer?

I was also wondering if anyone had created a good tutorial here, on using Performance Monitor, creating some counters or a trace, to monitor which processes were using the disk a lot at startup ?

I've been meaning to do something about my laptop's performance on boot for a while but I've just been too busy to really analyse what's going on at startup. It's just the first 2 minutes after startup, but disk usage is 100%. I'm only using Windows Defender and I haven't installed many programs yet, the laptop's only a few months old, fairly standard setup.
