1511 does not keep desktop icon positions when switching users

Just finished the 1511 update of Windows 10 Home on the Vaio.

The issue is there in its full glory. I set the scaling to 125% using Settings->System->Display (without even going into the "Advanced" categories). Now fast-switching users loses the icon arrangement.

In fact, there's no need to even login into another user. All one needs to do is hit Ctrl+Alt+Del, select "Switch User" option and then immediately login back into the same user. Icons will be swept to the left edge of the screen.

There's no additional software of any kind on that Vaio (meaning no ESET).

After experimenting with several completely unrelated machines, I'm afraid I have to conclude that you are not following the sequence of steps needed to reproduce the problem.

    The problem is immediately reproducible.

I too confirm the indicated issue. Since the 1511 update, both the desktop icon cannot stay in customized position and will all shift to the left when: 1. logout the account and login again 2. wake up from sleep 3. reboot 4. other random incidents. I did not install any antivirus software. I have tried various ways and none work (including the registry edit method https://www.tenforums.com/general-dis...ot-saving.html previously shown to work for many users).

Thanks for 'temporarily' solving the problem for my home computer. After changing the scaling back to 100%, the problem did disappear! However, I am using 4k monitor and I really need scaling > 100%. BTW, I have other computers at work with scaling > 100% and also upgraded to 1511 recently. But they do not have this issue.

1511 does not keep desktop icon positions when switching users

We might be talking about different issues. In my case I have no problems with regular logout/login, reboots, shutdowns or waking up from sleep: all icon positions are preserved.

My issue is rather specific: it occurs only when using so called "fast user switching" feature. The easiest way to reproduce it is to login into some user account, hit Ctrl+Alt+Del, select "Switch User" on the screen that appears, and then log back into the same user.

    My scenario:

    - Updated from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. (Surface Pro 3)
    - Prior to update, scaling was set to 150% - switching users / changing resolution / whatever -- icons positions are never lost.
    - After update:
-- switching resolutions resets all icon positions to top-left
-- switching users resets all icon positions to top-left.

    How I fixed it:

    - Right click desktop, display settings -- turn off custom scaling (set to 100%)
    - Now the icon positions are kept (hurray!) -- however, the screen is unreadable without scaling.
    - Click 'advanced settings' on display settings
    - Click 'advanced sizing of text and other items'
    - Click 'set a custom scaling level (not recommended)'
    - Set it to 150% (strangely, it was already set to 150 for me here)
    - It will prompt to log out/in -- do so.
    - Scaling is back to normal, icon positions are not lost & everything appears to work.
    - Now when I go to display settings it says in red: "A custom scale factor is set" and scaling factor cannot be changed.

It appears the "new school" / recommended way of setting scaling (which will convert for you if you upgrade to W10) has some bugs around icon positions getting lost after switching resolutions (when I noticed it) or logging out/in (as others have noted in these forums).... until it is fixed, one can use the "old school" way as mentioned in steps above to get the same behaviour without the bugs.

Here's hoping Microsoft fixes this bug with icon positions being lost.... it is most annoying.

On 11082 build this happens with or without custom scaling set for me when switching users. I tried setting to 100% and back to 150% custom as described above but they still all jump to the left on switching.

Having scaling set 100% works but is too small to read for me.

I posted this issue but didn't get a reply https://www.tenforums.com/general-dis...ing-users.html. I have the 125% scaling and I have this problem when switching between accounts. I now log out of an account before going to another account to avoid the problem. Fast user switching is effectively broken on the current release - another fine example of sloppy Microsoft QA. I hope Microsoft have this 'feature' on their problem list and will fix it soon.

By using the default scaling options, you can set multiple displays at different scaling (e.g., one at 100% and the other at 125%). When I set the scaling to other than 100%, the icon position is just not 'remembered'. By using custom scaling, you can only set all displays at the same scaling level (not ok if displays have different screen size and resolution). Yes, the icon position is now remembered, but the texts/icons on one display are now too big. Hope they can solve this issue soon!
