1607: WU consuming 100% of limited resources - CPU, network

Just a couple of rants about 2 systems that I either use or help maintain, each with separate performance issues that all boil down to Windows Update resource hogging.

Case 1: An Atom-based netbook, performing adequately under 1511, which ground to a dead halt after 1607 and all subsequent cumulative updates. Task Manager shows 100% CPU utilization by svchost (netscvs). Going through the hosted processes and killing them off one by one, things go back to normal when Windows Update is terminated (twice, of course, because it restarts). Background: net connection is WiFi and it has been set to "metered" from day 1. P2P update sharing also disabled. WU should now be sleeping - why, then, the CPU hogging? No permanent solution found yet except to kill Windows Update except when performing a manual update on an uncapped data source.

Case 2: A more modern desktop, but with a slow wired DSL network connection, which performed adequately under 1511, had network throughput ground to a dead halt under 1607 and all subsequent cumulative updates. Tried a full network reset, driver update, turn autotuning off (and back on as it did nothing), disabling all background apps, the whole spiel. No difference. Task Manager Resource Monitor shows 100% bandwidth utilization by svchost (netsvcs). Going through the hosted processes and killing them off one by one, things go back to normal when Windows Update is terminated (twice, of course, because it restarts). Background: net connection is ethernet but not set to metered. P2P update sharing is also disabled. Solution: set ethernet connection to metered; back in business.

    :)

  2. Windows update consumes 100% disk - Want to limit resources.

Yes, I mean, I have two laptop; One(with disk 100% problem) uses Home version, and another(without any problem) uses Education. I saw that option on Education version, and confused when I saw Home version because nothing was in there.

I will post the result whether my issue is resolved, when next windows update is finished.
