Windows 10: 16bit image files do not display correctly as Windows 11 wallpapers

Recently came across this issue where 16bit images .TIF, if set as desktop backgrounds, are displayed significantly brighter than they should. If the same image is converted to an 8bit .TIF or .JPEG then the image is displayed correctly. It is probably worth noting that image viewing programs such as Windows Photo Viewer, and third-party do not incorrectly display the image regardless of color bit-depth.The first image is the correctly displayed 8bit, the second is the overly brightened somewhat desaturated 16bit.

Not Showing Images for 16bit tiff files

I have read the threads re: not seeing tiff Thumbnails in Windows Explorer. I have cleared the cache, all temp files, restarted over and over again. These are mostly 16bit tiff photos. It displays jpg's fine. It happened out of the blue after a re-start when Outlook slowed down. All of a sudden it would not display tiff thumbnails. The icons are there along with the titles but not the image. I also Saved a copy or Saved As from Photoshop and did have the thumbnail box checked by default. Any ideas? This is a major inconvenience.

 

How to keep Windows 11 wallpaper slideshow from impacting current application in use when the wallpaper image changes?

Is there a way to prevent Windows 11 wallpaper slideshow from affecting other applications? For instance, when you wish to rename a file in "File Explorer" the app kicks you out of the rename process and refreshes the file list when the desktop wallpaper image changes. I like the 1-minute refresh rate but not when it plays havoc with the applications I'm using at the time.

 

Icons from apps aren´t displayed correctly

Do the apps work fine apart form the icons not displaying correctly? If so I would suggest you to run an SFC scan and check if it helps. If the issue persists you may run DISM command and check.

Follow this steps:

    Click on Command Prompt (Admin).

    Type the command SFC /SCANNOW and
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and hit
    Enter.
