  1. 2017 windows 10 Creator update damaged Homegroup

    Hello,
My name is Daniel and I am having issues with the HOMEGROUP ever since the big update that came at the end of spring for windows 10.

First, my system is as follows:
    there are 4 computers:
3 windows 10, 64 bits computers Home Edition, hardwired to the modem directly.
1 laptop windows 10 Home edition, connected wirelessly.

The problem that I have is as follows:
I have been using "Homegroup" for the past 3 years or so, and it always worked very well.
But ever since the "Creator's update" released either in April or may 2017, the Homegroup feature is broken.

My main computer which was the one who started the "Homegroup" got updated first, and after that, no other computer sees the homegroup.

However, I need to explain the following:
My main computer, who started the homegroup, still sees the "old homegroup" as active, AKA Ghost homegroup.
I have tried to delete it by following the steps here
Fix issues with the homegroup in Windows 10

Solution 1 – Delete files from PeerNetworking folder

    • Go to c:\windows\serviceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking.
    • Delete idstore.sst and move on to Step 3. If deleting idstore.sst doesn’t work, go back to c:\windows\serviceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking and delete all files and folders in it and go back to Step 3.
    • Go to the Network Settings and Leave the Homegroup.
    • Repeat this for all the computers in your network.
    • Turn off your computers.
    • Turn on just one, and create a new Homegroup on it.
    • This Homegroup should be recognized on all of your computers now.

I have followed this step by step. But I cant get rid of the old "homegroup".
This started to happen only after I upgraded to the "Creators update" and all computers are up to date.

How can I get rid once and for all from this ghost homegroup.

I have the followed the above mentioned steps, in each of the computers in the network. This ghost homegroup still appears and I can't join it, or leave it.

    :)

I have made no changes to the homegroup. And have already double checked the advanced sharing settings in the control panel.

I am using Windows 10 Home version 1607 OS Build 14393.1480

None of the threads have been of assistance.

Last night a laptop that was working fine with scanning from the same scanner on the same network. Immediately stopped working again when it completed a windows update as well.

I ran the homegroup troubleshooter and it found no errors

In case you didn't, you have to create the New HomeGroup on the same PC that had started the Old HomeGroup.

  5. Hello Eagle and Thank you for replying.

Unfortunately I can't. In order to create a new HomeGroup in Windows 10, there can't be another Homegroup present. But this "Ghost Homegroup" is present and I can't access it, or leave it. As soon as I go to "Homegroup", I dont get a choice to create a new one. The only choice I have, is to join it.

Have you tried the HomeGroup Trouble Shooter on the PC that started the original HomeGroup?

Probably a long shot, but you can try the steps again.

    1. Make sure all PC's have left the HomeGroup or are NOT joined to a HomeGroup
    2. Turn off all PC's
    3. Start the PC that originally created the HomeGroup and now has the Ghost HomeGroup and create a New HomeGroup.
    4. After reboot, you should be able to create a new HomeGroup on that PC replacing the Ghost HomeGroup.
    5. Print or write down new HomeGroup password.
    6. Start other PCs and attempt to join HomeGroup with new password.

  7. Yes I did. More than once, twice, 3 x or more to no avail.
The best I did, was to delete all those files on the "PeerNetworking" folder, in all computers, and turn all of them off. I disconnected the modem, and left it unplugged, no power, for about 2 minutes.

I then turn the modem on and then, the main computer that created the first "ghost" homegroup on.

Searched for homegroup, and initially, it says there is no homegroup available so I create one.
I finish the Homegroup creator wizard with the password and everything but, like 30 seconds after I finish, a message in the "Homegroup" window says, "We have detected a homegroup already has been created, you can join in to ....." So my newly created Homegroup is gone, and the "Ghost" one takes over. No other computer has been turned on yet at this point.
When I do turn the other computers, they see the old "homegroup", but no one can join, because I dont know the password to it.
A thing to notice is that. I can ping all other computers in the network, and when I go to "Network" under "This PC", I see the other computers, but I cant access them.

I have also tried to create a homegroup in the other computers first, and then try to make the main computer connect to the other newly created Homegroup, but the computer with the "Ghost homegroup" doesnt detect the homegroup created by other computers. It still prompts me to join the "Ghost Homegroup".

So I am out of ideas here.
