Windows 10: 2nd Major Problem - Audio disappears

Running 1903 (Build18362.535)
When I turn on my laptop I get the Windows startup tune. If I go to my Music folder in File Explorer I can a folder and play it - for about 7 minutes. Then the sound goes away. And stays away. No system sounds, no application sounds. Even after a restart I get nothing. The only way to get it back is to do a complete shutdown, and then turn it on again. And then the 7 minute countdown starts. And that 7 minutes doesn't care if I'm using the sound or not.

I've done the Audio Troubleshooting, which couldn't find any problems. I've searched Event Viewer, looking for anything audio related, but I guess my Event Viewer skills are a bit rusty, since I found nothing. I have deleted the audio driver, shut down and let Windows reinstall a driver on boot.

Curiously, if I plug headphones into the laptop the sound is fine.

I don't think it can be a wiring issue, since after I boot the laptop is stationary.

Audio disappeared - got it back but now have odd mkv problem


Hi. While working at my Windows 10 PC yesterday, I realised there was no sound. My media players gave video only and Avidemux gave a warning “Trouble Initializing Audio Device”. All the obvious checks suggested that there was no problem, drivers were up to date etc.

I went to the sound icon in the system tray and clicked 'Troubleshoot sound problems' which told me it had fixed something but didn't say what. I now have my sound back but with some new issues:

• my WMP no longer plays mkv files
• my mkv files no longer show a 'thumbnail', just the logo of whichever media player is set to play them.

Can anyone suggest what on Earth happened yesterday? Many thanks.

UPDATE: I've found one or two mkv files that DO work with WMP and show thumbnails(!!). But the vast majority of my mkv's have the highlighted problem. All very odd...

• What troubleshooting steps have you done so far?

We suggest that you try to run the

Step 1.

I would suggest you to run sound audio troubleshooter, it will automatically detect the problem and fix it. Follow the below steps.

  Press Windows key + R and click on
  Control Panel.
  
• 
  Click on View by: category and click on
  Small icon.
  
• 
  Now click on troubleshooting and click on
  Hardware and Sound.
  
• 
  Click on Playing Audio and Click on
  Next button.
  
• 
  Click on Advanced on the Audio troubleshooter dialog box and click on Run as administrator (Enter the credentials if required).
  
• 
  Click on Next and follow onscreen instruction complete the Audio troubleshooter.
  

If the issue still persist, try the below steps.

Step 2.

I suggest you to set the headset as default and check.

  Right click on the on the sound icon on the Windows taskbar.

  Click on Sounds and click on Playback
  tab.
  
• 
  Click on the headset and set it as default by clicking on the
  Set default button.
  
• 
  Now click Apply and OK.
