Windows 10: 2nd monitor problem

I have my laptop XPS 15 connected to LG ultragear monitor. All was well and fine at the beginning when it came to display options duplicate these displays, extend these displays, show only on 1, show only on 2.I primarily use the extended display option. Earlier, I needed the space on my desk so I thought to close the lid and put the laptop away while still connected to the monitor. Normally, when I close the lid, the show only on 2 option activates automatically and life goes on. but all of a sudden, whenever I close the lid, the external monitor goes black and disconnects, and only turns

• What changes did you make in the BIOS? As making the changes in the BIOS is only recommended by Microsoft if done by the manufacturer.
  

• How are you connecting to the 2nd monitor?

Have you checked your Display settings? If not, we recommend that you follow the steps below:

• Right click on the open space of the desktop screen.
• Select Display settings.
• Under Display tab, click Identify to know which monitor is having the issue.
• Once you have identified the monitor, select the monitor you are getting issue’s with.
• Drag the bar to the left side if the resolution is magnified to more 100% in
  Change the size of text, apps, and other items.
• Click Apply to save the changes.

If issue still persists, we recommend that you check the monitor setting and set it up to default. For more information or assistance with your monitor settings, you can contact the device’s manufacturer.

The 2nd monitor is not appearing in the control panel

Original; Title: dual monitor problem

Have just upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. In Windows 7 my dual monitor set up worked perfectly but now both screens are identical (duplicated) with everything exactly the same on both. The 2nd monitor is not appearing in the control panel at all
and any help to solve this would be appreciated.

I have disconnected the 2nd monitor and tried most things suggested on the forums but no change is the result.
