3 PC's: Free upgrade using ISO?

I'm sure this has been asked, but I couldn't find it, sorry. The MS site only explains the GWX.exe app as the way to get the free upgrade from Win7. I have 3 PCs to upgrade. If I make a DVD using the MCT, option "Create installation media for other PC's", can I use it for the free upgrade. The MCT page seems to say NO, you can't? Must I download Win10 for each PC?

    :)

  3. Retail License Transfers?

    PC 1

Windows 10 Pro Edition (Upgraded from Windows 8.0 Pro Retail for free, after updating to Windows 8.1 Pro, and no longer in use)

    PC 2

Windows 10 Pro Edition (Upgraded from Windows 8.1 Pro Retail, and no longer in use)

    PC 3

Windows 10 Home Edition (Upgraded from Windows 8.1 Home for free, currently in use)

    PC 4

Windows 8.1 Pro (OEM, currently in use)

I've heard that an install of Windows 10, upgraded from a retail version of Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 can be transferred to another PC, if the original hardware is no longer in use (Motherboard replacement, or whole PC replacement)

If possible, I'd like to take the license from PC 1, and apply it to PC 3, to upgrade it from Home edition to Pro Edition, and take the license on PC 2, and apply it to PC 4, so that I can install Windows 10 Pro edition, without having to purchase a new license.

    Is this possible?

  4. 3 PC's: Free upgrade using ISO?

    No.

The disc/USB stick you made will work perfectly fine on all your PCs assuming they have the same version of Windows.

For example, If you have downloaded Windows 10 Pro, then it will only activate successfully on computers running Windows 7/8.1 Pro.

The download links on the MCT site didn't mention version, just x86 or x64. I have Win 7 Ultimate and 7 Pro N, both x64. Do I just run setup from the old OS and skip the key entry? Where is this documented?

  6. One way to do it is to select the "Upgrade This PC Now" Option. It will figure out the correct version to install for you. The first 32 bit 64 bit choice is just based on what your PC is currently running. If the OS your running the tool on is 64 bit, run the 64 bit setup. After that you get choices, Home or Pro, N or not N version, 32 bit or 64 bit. Once the upgrade is done, check the System page to see what version you ended up with, then download that version for future installs.

Sorry, I still don't understand. If I select "Upgrade this PC now" does it still make an ISO I can use elsewhere? I don't want to download twice if I can help it.

  8. 3 PC's: Free upgrade using ISO?

No, it upgrades without creating any media. What version of Windows 10 you get with the free upgrade is determined by what OS your upgrading from. Example, 8.1 gets you 10 Home, 8.1 Pro gets you 10 Pro. In that instance you can't use the 1 ISO to upgrade both. The N version also adds another wrinkle. You have to upgrade an N version with the matching Windows 10 N version. I think your looking at multiple downloads anyway. What versions of windows are you upgrading from?

Both will upgrade to Windows 10 Pro x64

“N” and “KN” editions follow the upgrade path of the parent edition (e.g., Windows 7 Pro N upgrades to Windows 10 Pro N).

I'd like to get definitive answers, with links to MS documentation:

    • Is the ONLY way to get the free upgrade either by GWX or MCT"Upgrade this PC"?
    • The ISO produced by MCT"Create media" option cannot be used for the initial free upgrade. True or false? If false, please provide link.
    • The ISO produced by MCT is version-specific: Home OR Pro, not both, Full OR "N", not both. True or false? links?
My three machines are Ult N, Pro N, and "8.1 with Bing", all x64.
    Thanks.

I have upgraded 2 laptops and 2 desktops from ISO dvd downloaded from Microsoft MCT. Upgrades were 1x windows 8.1 home x64, 1x windows 7 ultimate x64, 1x windows 8.1 pro x64, and 1x windows 7 ultimate x86. I downloaded 3 ISO'S and installed from them, and all 4 systems upgraded for free and are activated automatically over the internet. Hope this helps.

Thank you mvito! That's the answer I've been looking for. I presume both your 7 Ult and 8.1 Pro x64 installs could be updated using the same Win 10 Pro x64 ISO, correct? Did you do the clean install "Keep nothing" option on the initial upgrade, or did you keep your installed programs?
