Windows 10: 3600 mhz memory in a MB rated for 3400...

I have a Gigabyte ga-z170-hd3p motherboard (i7 6700K processor) with an with a maximum rated ram speed of 3400 mhz. But I can get a much much better price on 3600 memory. In another forum I was told that it could throttle back the 3600 to well below 3400. Any truth to that? I understand that the 3600 won't run any faster than the 3400 but are there any drawbacks.

Mike, On my Gigabyte Z170, on the memory specifications it says that everything above 2400 MHz is considered OC
