  1. 3D Viewer not working when opening files that are in folders

Hi all! So after transitioning to Windows 11, I observed an issue with 3D Viewer. I work a lot with 3D files, mainly .stl and it seems that after moving to Win 11 3D Viewer is working only when I open something that is located on the desktop. I can open 3D file directly from Desktop but if the file is in any folder I receive error message. When I go to: This PC and open Desktop as a folder in Windows Explorer all files that worked directly from desktop are not opening suddenly showing also an error. Other apps like 3D Builder in the same scenarios are working just fine. Below I'm attaching scr

  2. Unable to open .obj file in Mixed Reality viewer error 'couldn't load 3d model'.

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Community Forums.

Appreciate your efforts to work on this issue.

I can understand the situation must be difficult for you when the file or program doesn't work as it should.

    1. Are you aware of any changes made to the PC prior to this issue?
    2. From which website did you download the file?
    3. Are you able to open other files in mixed reality viewer?

I would like to let you know that Mixed Reality is a combination of augmented reality and traditional Virtual Reality.

Suggest you to follow these steps to check if that helps.

    1. Open the folder that contains the .OBJ file.
    2. Right-click the file. A context menu will expand.
    3. Click ‘Open with’. It’s at the top of the menu. Another menu will expand.
    4. Click Paint 3D. This opens the file on your PC. The .OBJ files are also supported by Adobe Photoshop and Mixed Reality Viewer.

  3. Sending 3D created files as an email attachment

    Hello,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

Usually, the 3D files saved from Mixed reality viewer or Paint 3D will be saved in the folder 3D Objects on the PC.

Since you want to send the 3D file that you created as an email attachment, you can do it by going to the email app you are using and attach the file by locating the 3D objects folder. Follow the steps to locate the 3D objects folder while attaching
    the 3D file.

    1. Click on the Attachment option on the email app.
    2. Now on the attachment window locate This PC on the left hand side pane.
    3. The 3D Objects folder will be under Folders on the right hand side pane.

    Hope it helps.

  4. 3D Viewer not working when opening files that are in folders

    3D viewer not opening

Hi Ninjacado and thanks for reaching out. My name is Joseph. I'm an independent advisor. I'll be happy to help you out today.

I would suggest you refer to the below options and check if it helps to resolve the issue.

    Option 1. Repair 3D Viewer

    1. Press Start Menu and type 3D Viewer, right-click, and select App settings.

    2. Click the 'Repair' button.

    Option 2. Reset 3D Viewer.

    1. Press Start Menu and type 3D Viewer, right-click, and select App settings.

    2. Click the 'Reset' button.

    Option 3. Reinstall and Re-register 3D Viewer.

    1. Open an elevated command prompt.

2 Copy-paste the command below and press Enter.

    PowerShell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted -Command "& {$manifest = (Get-AppxPackage *Microsoft3DViewer*).InstallLocation + '\AppxManifest.xml' ; Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $manifest}"

Option 4. Run System File Checker and Deployment Image Servicing and Management commands

    1. Press the Windows key, type in CMD right-click and click on "Run as an administrator".

    2. Copy-paste: sfc /scannow

    3. Press Enter. Wait until it completes.

    4. Copy-paste: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

    5. Press enter. Wait until it completes.

Option 5. Perform a clean boot in Windows

    Summary

A “clean boot” starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs so that you can determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program. This is similar to starting Windows in Safe Mode but provides you more control
over which services and programs run at startup to help you isolate the cause of a problem.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let me know how it goes.

    Thank you!
