Windows 10: 5.1 Sound

Why is 5.1 sound so expensive? My sound board sound is 5.1 compat but, everywhere I look it costa da bomba!! *Mad

Windows 10 5.1 surround sound not working

Same problem here. I do know that the running the 5.1 test will always work because it's playing back a sound file that is already 5.1 encoded. Running any program that will pass its sound to your hardware for 5.1 encoding gets processed as stereo.

I'm using a SoundBlaster X-Fi 5.1 Pro and everything worked fine in Windows 7. After upgrading to 10 I no longer get 5.1 sound from anything; all stereo. Creative updated their drivers but still no 5.1 so I'm guessing at this point Windows 10 is to blame.

In Windows 10 control panel, in sound options, configure speakers, there are two options stereo and 5.1. If I pick 5.1 will this upmix stereo music to 5.1? I use headphones if that changes anything. I didn't think Windows did any sound processing on its
own but when I pick 5.1 my music is a lot louder on the same volume setting.

 

Because it uses 2.5X as many satellites as a 2.1 system?

There's a range, as in most things.

The Logitech Z506 system is s relatively cheap 5.1 system. Much cheaper in the USA than in the UK, apparently ($59, shipped).

I'm mystified as to why there are vendor at Amazon (UK or US) that list the same product at several times the price of the lowest entries. Does anyone ever buy from them?

 

Bobkn, they think we are stupid! Well, socialists are! I'm not, maybe it might be cheaper for me to import USA? I checked your link, its $ for £ almost.

I'm not sure that socialists are stupid with their own money. (They have some, else they'd be communists.)

I'm not optimistic about importing stuff. For example: I was recently wondering if I could import some Wharfedale DS-1 powered speakers into the US. (They don't distribute that model here.) I found a German outfit on eBay that would do it, but the total cost would have been prohibitive. A lot to pay for a gray market version (no warranty).

 

It was a touch of sarcasm, anyway .......................... the thing with 'imported' stock is that it all usually comes from the same source anyway - China! But something seems to have gone pear shaped in China, economy is wobbly for one thing. I think some of these mega profit, poor quality company's will have to spend a lot of their profits on moving, again.
