Windows 10: 5000 mouse not seen on bluetooth

My mouse quit talking with my Windows 10 64 bit Bluetooth. I deleted it and then tried to pair it again but the system is asking for a pin # and it has never needed one before. I tried 0000 but that does not work. The Bluetooth does not "see" the device but the system is obviously recognizing it because it lets me try to attach it but wants the password. The mouse connection has been a problem ever since I purchased the HP laptop. The drivers are up to date and the system says that the Bluetooth is working properly.

I just had the same problem. I was using Control Panel to install a new device and it would recognize the Microsoft 5000 mouse, but then it was "grayed out" on the device list. So I removed it. And the "Troubleshooter" couldn't solve the problem [big
surprise there!].

On Device Manager, I went to the Bluetooth and the Mouse Drivers and made sure they were updated (I had this problem after I had to re-install Windows 10). And then:

What did work was to go to : Start>Settings (the gear on the Start page>Bluetooth Devices; then make sure the computer and the mouse are "Discoverable" and the installation worked.
