  1. 6-bit per color channel and Win11

I am using Windows 10 and am interested in upgrading to Windows 11. My laptop is almost 6 years old, and will be fine for the upgrade except for one thing. My display has only 6 bits per color channel, and Win11 wants a minimum of 8 bits. I Googled this issue extensively. My laptop is ONLY 6 bit and does not have an option for 8 bit.If I upgrade to Win11, will my display monitor be wonky? I have not been able to get a straight answer anywhere about this. Do I actually need to get a new monitor? Thanks for any advice or information you can offer.

    :)

  2. Color bit depth is at 6-bit on Display properties of Windows 10 pro

Try the below suggested steps and check if the suggested options are available to change the Color bit Depth value

    1. Right click on the desktop and select NVIDIA Control Panel.
    2. Expand the Display, and then highlight the Change resolution.
    3. On the right side, check if there is 8 bpc listed under
      Output color depth.
    4. You may select 8 bpc and restart the device to witness the changes.

  3. Will Windows 11 Run On A PC With 6 Bit Per Colour Channel?

    Hi,

My name is Igor, I have 12 Microsoft MVP awards. It's a pleasure for me to help others and I'll do all my best to help you. I'm sorry you have a problems.

    Please see https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows...

    it says:

Graphics card Compatible with DirectX 12 or later with WDDM 2.0 driver.

Display High definition (720p) display that is greater than 9” diagonally, 8 bits per color channel.

These are general requirements. Feature specific requirement are listed at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows... and they do not mention color bitness.

6-bit per color channel and Win11

Will Windows 11 Run On A PC With 6 Bit Per Colour Channel?

It says the requirements are 8 bit per colour channel, but is that for specific apps, or will 6 bit per colour channel stop Windows 11 running on a PC, given that all the other requirements are met? I am confused as to whether the requirements are app specific, or system wide.
