Windows 10: 72hz not too common

I have Samsung C27F591 and I set it up to 72hz. Many games doesn`t support 72hz so it will lock with vsync my fps to 60 and because of that I will have stutter and screen tearing.

For example Metro Last light vsync is 60fps. Would it be good to turn off vsync off and in set frame limit in graphics card settings to 71? Any drawbacks with this settings?

Will you tube video stutter if I watch it with 72hz? Is it better to put it to 60hz frequency?

I've recently "overclocked" my monitor to 75Hz and v-sync works fine at that frame rate, can you squeeze an extra 3 hertz out of your monitor?

 

I read that Samsung monitor are not very overclockable and I won`t OC my new monitor *Rolleyes

 

It's not so much an overclock as a "what your panel can handle", it won't cause any damage, you'd be limited by the connection you have, or the scaling of the panel, for example, my monitor can handle 75Hz at 1080p, but only over HDMi, I can get 66Hz with DVI-D, so if your panel can handle it, it'll do it, a solution would be to set your refresh rate to 60Hz rather than 72Hz, that way it'll work fine with V-sync, but you have to remember that games will only be limited to 60fps if it's a hard lock within the game, they'll support variable refresh rates most of the time.

 

Maybe in future I will OC monitor, but not now.

I was anyway thinking using this method with Afterburner - RTSS because of this (seems much better to have this open form startup than to change frequencies constantly in windows settings):

Is it necessary to lock fps to 1 fps below monitor frequency, in this case it is 71fps?

Need to test this more to see if it is all without any problems.


Would also help if I for older games (when vsync off) use enhanced sync (I think that is the right name) - turn off vsync and activate freesync?

 

One thing to do is if you have an AMD video card, enable FreeSync.

As far as the 72 MHz goes, I have a very similar spec'ed Samsung monitor,

27 LED Monitor with Super Slim Design | LS27F350FHNXZA | Samsung CA

that I have run at 72 MHz since I got it a year ago. Also run it with FreeSync enabled on both the monitor and in the Radeon settings, and haven't noticed any tearing in Youtube or any other video.

As far as vsync and FreeSync, it depends on the game and what kind of FPS you are getting. This here,

is a good guideline for which settings to use.

That is mentioned by a couple of people in the link above. Things have changed a little bit recently as AMD introduced Enhanced Sync,

Also if you have a game that is limited/locked to 60 FPS you can look inside the game's install folder for a config file of some kind, that is hopefully editable (can check the game's website/forum for more info) and change it to whatever you want.
