Still getting jerked around hard & heavy by Win 8.1* [so-called] System RecoveryWhen Advanced asks for Install/Recovery media, BOTH original Win8 disk AND Win 8.1 ISO download burned to DVDprompt Error ".. not valid media.." WTH??So ... Precisely WHERE is that "valid media"** to be found?????-----Also - using 8.1 ISO to attempt Repair from Install DVD options window - despite having hacked Registry to precludelocal Login, Windows still demands a local? Password, and then rejects ALL valid passwords I've used with my .hotmail primaryM$ account.ARGGGGGHH!!!!!!__________________________

System Protection Recovery

1. Step 1: Right-click the lower-left corner and open System in the Quick Access Menu.
2. Step 2: Choose System protection on the left.
3. Step 3: Select a hard disk and tap Configure to move on.
4. Step 4: Choose Turn on system protection and hit OK.
5. Step 3: Select Disable system protection and hit OK.

 

The system image restore failed. The post-recovery operation to install drivers in the offline operating system failed. (0x807800B8)".

I understand the inconvenience you are facing currently. Let me help you in resolving the issue.

I suggest you to try few of the below troubleshooting steps and check if it helps.

Step 1: I suggest you to start Volume Shadow Copy service
and set it to Automatic.

Steps to Start the service and set it to automatic:

• Press Windows Key + R on the keyboard and type
  services.msc, Services window gets opened.
• Search for Volume Shadow Copy service, right click on it and click on
  Properties.
• Start the service, set
  Startup type to Automatic.

Note: You may lose the restore points when you stop the VSS.

Step 2: I suggest you to perform clean boot to avoid any third party software conflict and check.

Disclaimer: Putting your system in
Clean Boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue. You need to follow the steps from the article mentioned below to perform a Clean Boot.

How does Windows boot to advanced recovery option e.g. command prompt?

- that gives me a 454 'Unexpected error' This tells me that the BCD is partially corrupted.

The commands: shutdown.exe /r /o /f /t 00
or: %SystemRoot%\System32\Cmd.exe /c reagentc /boottore&shutdown /r /f /t 00
should boot into Recovery if everything is configured correctly.
FYI, If Windows is configured correctly:

1. If Reagentc is disabled, you still can get into Recovery but with limited options.
2. If Reagentc is enabled, you'll get all options.
3. If you boot Windows using Recovery USB stick, You'll get into Recovery with couple of options missing.

Here's my suggestion if you want to try:
OPTION 1: Will save the trouble of re-install Windows.

1. Download the image of my first 3 partitions (450MB Recovery, 100 MB EFI partition, and 16MB unformatted primary)
   EFI_Boot-00-00.7z - Google Drive
2. Run Macrium and restore the image from step 1, overwriting your existing 1st three partitions, leaving C alone.
3. Delete the 490MB Recovery partition.
4. From Macrium, run fix boot problems.
5. Reboot. Open Admin command prompt then run Reagentc /info to make sure that it is enabled. If not, enable it.
   if failed to enable, reboot and try again.

OPTION 2: Assuming you've already had Windows backup with Macrium.

1. Wipe out the first 5 parttiions. (450MB, 100MB, 16MB, C Drive, 480MB)
2. Fresh install Windows 10
3. Restore C drive from backup image, run fix boot problems
4. repeat step 5 from OPTION 1 above.
