Windows 10: 8-10 startup and sign out after update, please help

First of all, is this the correct forum for Windows 10 support? I heard that Microsoft is offering free support but have no clue where I should be asking around for it.

I upgraded my Alienware M17 to Windows 10 with no problems (knock on wood), but my girlfriends HP Envy Notebook is having some issues. Right after Windows 10 installed the first time it was fine for a few hours and then it ran an automatic update... After restarting the PC it took, literally, 10 minutes to get to the lock-out screen to sign in. After signing in everything seems to work fine. When I click restart it logs out quickly, shuts down just fine, but after the HP bios loads it goes to the blank Windows 10 screen (with the little loading dots circling) and sits there for 10 minutes before finally changing over to the sign in screen.

When I just "sign out" without restarting it also takes an equally ridiculous amount of time (8-10 minutes)

At first I thought maybe I had done something bad with the registry cleaner... lol, so I did a full reset and reinstalled the OS, downloaded and installed all new drivers and everything was just fine (again) until it did an automatic upgrade... then its back to being nearly unusable.

Now, I have heard rumors that Windows 10 startup is ridiculously slow. How SLOW is slow? Like 8-10 minutes?

Yes, I have enable fast startup (and hibernation) and it does nothing to help (yes, I know it does not work with "restart" and only "shut down").

I wonder if the problem is when Windows 10 upgrades to version 1511 because it is fine before it does any auto updating. But if it keeps updating there is no point in trying to pinpoint which update it causing this. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Can't boot Windows 10 in Normal Startup, Use original boot configuration not working

I had performed a clean boot on my Windows 10 PC. When I get back to the Normal startup which I did by selecting Normal startup under General tab in the System Configuration I can't. I am unable to boot
in normal startup since after checking Normal Startup I reboot my PC it automatically shifts to selective startup.I want to Normal startup to be selected as the default startup. One more thing I
like to tell which can help to guide me that Use original boot configuration under selective startup not working. This is greyed out.

Please help!

Numerous reboot and signing out went in vain. Please guide.

 

Win 10: start menu not working every other boot, after 1709 update

Yes I'm still experiencing the issue. Maybe 50% chance of start menu unable to open after a Windows startup, "fixed" by signing out then signing back in. I think this only started to happen after the latest major Windows update - a month ago?

We are a Windows 10 support forum, but are not part of Microsoft. That said, this is the place you'll probably find the best W10 support on the web!

That's not right - it shouldn't take that long. I am wondering if it's having problems with all the HP-installed "bloatware". I have found issues with Toshiba software not playing nice with W10, so I wouldn't be surprised.

I assume you've completed the "upgrade" and Windows 10 has been successfully activated. I would do a clean install, using the W10 ISO from MS TechBench. That will be the most current version. It will also not install anything from HP. You may find that you will need to install "some" special HP drivers afterwards. Please also make sure you have the latest BIOS. Then, turn Fast Startup OFF.

Hmm, well it did complete the upgrade but I am not sure it was activated. I remember seeing the system menu where it says if it is activated but if it requires me signing in or doing something (clicking activate) then no, it most likely did not activate.

Well, after the full reset everything was cleared. Even most of the drivers. There was nothing what-so-ever in the program list in the control panel. I downloaded all of the drivers (except for the software package - cyberlink garbage, etc) and reinstalled them then did several restarts and made a restore point. Everything was working fine. After I confirmed everything was working as intended I then let the computer auto-update. Shortly after the update the issue arose. I did not turn off the automatic driver updates in the settings, however. I was worried it may have installed a new driver and fudged things up.

I am currently resetting the OS again. I will make sure fast start up is turned off (but I made sure to test that before and it did not seem to make a difference one way or the other, don't think that's the issue here). When I get back into Windows again I will make sure to activate it and check out the download link you gave me.

While I am here and while we're talking about it... What is the best way to back up my Windows 10 OS now? I never got the Windows 7 backup to work properly. I would prefer to have a backup of the OS that will reinstall should the hard drive fail, you know? Can I make one using Windows 10 (a USB drive backup that actually works)? If I use an ISO to reinstall won't it need to be activated?

Edit: Hmm, that link you save me says to download both 32 and 64 bit operating systems. I will read the documentation since it most likely will answer my questions but... If I don't reinstall the correct OS it won't activate, yeah? Seems a bit scary. >.<


Windows 10 ISO Downloads

Make sure to download both 32-bit and 64-bit images and the languages you'll need for your retail location.

 

There's nothing to click, per se. But you might want to check in settings>update & security>activation to make sure it is. If you are working from a W8 machine, the key will be stored in the BIOS and W10 will pick that up during installation. If it was W7, you may need to input that key. Once W10 is activated you can clean install over and over.

Did you note what KBs were installed during the update that affected it? That would be good to know.

The TechBench ISO is the most current release to General Public (not Insider), and shouldn't require any major update. It may, however, update a driver or something else that's giving you trouble. It would be good to check the update list if it happens again so we can pinpoint things.

Macrium Reflect Free. Image your HDD to an external drive, verify images, set it up on a schedule, etc. It's the best.

Once W10 is activated on a system it receives Digital Entitlement from the MS servers and can be reinstalled as often as needed. There is no issue with activation once it has completed.

Well, I reset everything and reinstalled the essential drivers (left out a few from HP). It is possible that it may have been an HP app of some kind but my Jedi-like intuition is telling me to blame Microsoft. I deferred updates, turned off driver updates, and set it to a metered connection to limit updates for now. I have a hard time narrowing down updates with Windows 10. I know that some updates require a non-metered connection and some require you to be signed into Microsoft. Since I wasn't signed into Microsoft the first time it happened and since I updated it while it was set to a metered connection and so far have no troubles... I am assuming it was one of the updates that require a non-metered connection. Among those updates is a suspicious looking "cumulative 1511 update" of some kind but honestly, I got no clue. Heh. It did replace several of my drivers during the update that messed things up for me but for now it seems to be stable. Hopefully I won't have to troubleshoot any more.

FWIW: The only updates that I know of, that you would have to be "signed in" for, are Insider updates, and you'd have to be a registered Insider to get those.

I would recommend making a system image now, while it's functioning, and also a backup of your non-OS drivers, in case you need to rollback in the future.

I have had numerous problems with my HP after upgrading from 7. You name it I encountered it. Finally figured it out !!
Uninstall HP support assistant , HP framework, HP setup(this one is important), HP quick launch (if you don't have it) and HP on screen display from the programs setup'
These HP programs are unnecessary and without a doubt cause problems, especially coming from Win 7, because they were configured for the previous OS. When you need to install drivers you can go to all the individual vendors and download them manually. This is good practice anyway.

After uninstalling all the HP crap, my system runs like a top. Actually better than the previous OS. Win 10 after it is tweaked is an awesome OS.
