85% RAM usage with 2 programs opened

    Hey,

So I got 8GBs of RAM, which I guess is enough. But my RAM usage is always at 85% with only Chrome and Discord opened, which is weird because i tried to manually calculate the processes and it doesn't seem to add up to 8GBs. I tried every YouTube tutorial on how to decrease RAM usage but it doesn't work.

    Here is my Task manager

So are there any solutions to this issue or do i have to buy additional RAM

    :)

    Task Manager RAM Usage

My computer is running 64 bit Windows 10 with 6 GB of RAM.

I have been monitoring my memory usage via Task Manager and occasionally download tasklist via the cmd line.

What has been bothering me is that my RAM usage at reboot starts at 34%, and left alone, increases to ~75-80% without running any programs.
(I do have start up programs including McAfee, Dropbox, Seagate console, gadgets, etc.)

When I analyze the tasklist download file via Excel, the total RAM memory usage is approximately 3.1 GB at 79%.
Doing the math, this means there is only 4 GB in use?

    I have 2 questions:

    1. Does Task Manager list all the RAM usage or is there some background usage that is not shown.?

    2. Is there any other way to monitor RAM leakage?

RAM usage in the taskmanager shows 160MB used as 85% of 8GB RAM

    Specs:

    Windows 10

    i7 4770k

    MSI Z87-G43

    nVidia GTX970

    1x 8GB RAM

    (advanced user)

Upload photo doesn't work at the moment for me, so I'll be explaining the situation with words:

When I open the taskbar while idle and look at my RAM usage, it shows pretty high numbers (75+).

I don't run many RAM-heavy programs at once so 75+ is not ordinary, and if I look at the combined usage per user it shows that I have used ~160MB RAM.

When I got to the second tab in the taskmanager, it shows that I have used 7,1GB of RAM.

    What am I missing here?

Another thing that is happening sometimes lately, is that my PC won't shut down when I click the 'shut down' button. It turns off the display and immediately returns to the lock screen, as if I pressed 'log off'.

Maybe this has something to do with the RAM being weird.

    Any help?

RAM usage in the taskmanager shows 160MB used as 85% of 8GB RAM

    Hi Willem,

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Community.

Also adding to ZigZag3143 (Windows IT Pro MS –MVP) point, if you track memory usage from the task manager, there are chances that the memory allocation is high due to some of the background services running on your PC.

    Method 1:

Step 1: If the issue persist, run the
power troubleshooter by following the steps below and check if the issue is resolved.

    • Type troubleshooting in the search box next to
      Start
icon and select the top most search result.
    • Click on View All from the left side of the screen panel.
    • Select Power from the options,
click on Advanced option and check
      Apply repairs automatically
      option.
    • Follow the on screen instructions.

Step 2: If the issue persist, follow the steps below and check if the issue is resolved.

    • Type Power Options in the Search box next to Start
      button and press enter.
    • From the left side panel, click on Choose what the power button do
      option.
    • Under Power and Sleep button settings, select Shut down
option from the dropdown bar under when I press the power button option.
    • Click on Save changes and close the window.

Method 2: If the issue persist, perform clean boot on the device
by following the steps from the link below and check if the issue is resolved.

Putting your system in Clean Boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue.

Following is a link to perform a Clean Boot:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135

Note: Start the computer in normal mode refer the section,
How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting
    from the link above.

Write back to us for further assistance, we will be happy to assist you.

    Thank you.
