Windows 10: 95% Memory usage all the time

Hi.

Lately I've noticed my machine is using 95ish percent of its physical memory pretty much at all times. I have 16.0 GB of RAM, so 95% usage is a lot.

When I look at the "Processes" tab in Task Manager and sort by memory usage, I see the usual suspects (Chrome, Discord, Windows Defender, etc). However Chrome being the highest usage is only using a measly 1.5GB. When I close chrome I do see a slight dip (from 95 to 90ish), but where's the other 13 gigs going??

What's even weirder is that it doesn't appear to really impact performance most of the time. It seems whenever I run a program that demands memory it runs just fine. As if whatever is stealing most of my memory is giving it back whenever I need it.

My first thought when I saw this was Superfetch (which I guess got renamed to SysMain?). However I disabled that a long time ago so that's not the culprit here.

What else could be causing this? Is my machine secretly mining bitcoin or something? It's really unsettling seeing so much of my computer "in use" when I'm not doing anything. Any help is appreciated!

Runaway memory usage

On your suggestion I went to uninstall AVG. It offered to go into an on-demand mode (I can't remember the word it used to describe).
So I tried that instead of uninstalling. Upon reboot everything seemed unchanged. High CPU usage, memory growth, no good.

So I ran the uninstall. This moved along step by step ... until the last step (titled: replacing files) never completed. It left behind a bunch of its stuff in Program Files:

So I have a bunch of leftover crap ... which I'll probably just delete.

Anyway, after rebooting it seems that all is well. CPU usage is near zero. The fans are quiet. (Computer fans, not football fans!) *chuckle

High Memory Usage (up to 95%) as Compressed, Slows Computer

I have 16 Gb of ram. Over the course of a couple weeks, the usage as compressed memory builds up to about 95%, at which point programs begin responding slower and my mouse seems to drop frames. Image below.

I've tried disabling superfetch, which i heard may have been causing the compressed memory. I'm aware that its supposed to be a performance enhancer, but i felt as though removing it would be easier. However, even when i disabled superfetch, it continued to compress memory. Sometimes when I restart the computer it would remove all of the compressed memory, but usually it doesnt and it builds up to 95% if i dont do anything about it.

In addition, it does not show up under the list of tasks. I remember it used to be shown under something called "system and compressed memory" but now it just says "system", and that "system" says its only using 0.1mb.

If someone knows how to completely remove this so called performance enhancing "feature", or a way of fixing this issue, I would greatly appreciate it.

 

100% Memory usage

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

You might be facing this issue due to several reasons like low virtual memory, third party software conflicts, virus threat on the computer etc.



Even though no programs or applications are running, some background services can show memory usage and disk usage. In order to check which particular program is using the memory, I would suggest you to check the Task manager.



Refer to these steps:

1. Press Windows key + X, select
task manager.

2. Click on the ‘Processes’ tab and it will show you show you a list of programs and services running and their corresponding memory usage and disk usage.

3. Check if any of the item listed is consuming more memory or disk usage than normal.



I suggest you to try the following steps and check if this helps.

You need to increase the virtual memory by making it equivalent to your RAM size for the initial size and twice of the initial size in maximum size and make sure you have the same amount of free space in your hard drive
in each drive.



To do this, follow the steps:

1. Go to Control Panel (Press Windows key + X)> All control panel items > System

2. Click on Advanced system settings.

3. Under Performance, click on settings

4. Go to Advanced tab

5. Under Virtual memory, click on Change

6. Un-check "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" check box

7. Select your windows drive (where OS is installed)

8. Click on Custom size radio button

9. Set Initial size equivalent to your RAM size in MB

10. Set Maximum size to twice of your RAM size in MB

11. Click on Set

12. Click on OK thrice

13. Restart your system
