Windows 10: A challenge for the pro's. Can you help identify a reg key please.

Thanks! I did a disk backup too just to see how it is and it's a lot bigger than the system backup but I guess I will stick with disk backup in case my HD get messed up or something so I can always restore every bit of it as it is now right?

Well I say disk backup is better cause I THINK those Win10 created partitions are important! Are they?

 

Hi, I can't comment on the size difference, but you can now choose either differential or incremental imaging based on your base image.

These are
a. faster
b. smaller (being changes from the base)

Of these incremental is the smaller, but restoration relies on every single image being valid, whereas differential requires only one differential image and the base image for restoration.

Not all free imaging program versions provide both options.

I did that image in fear of this anniversary update *Smile I usually leave this PC clean only for gaming and watch something on Netflix so I will stick with normal full backups from time to time cause I lose almost nothing important here. But it's nice to be able to restore everything as close as possible the way it was than do a clean Windows install!

 

I'm going to mark this one solved. The issue (tentatively confirmed by Macrium) is that the problem is down to Windows use of the VSS snapshot routine. In other words its a bug in W10.

I would have liked to continue using W10's disk imager but unfortunately this issue meant it would not restore a disk exactly. Macrium does seem to work (once you have altered the VSS option in Macrium) and so I have gone with that option.
