  2. 'Including Activation Troubleshooter on Windows 10 was based on user feedback by Windows Insiders that complained of activation issues on some devices after replacing hardware components, such as replacing the motherboard or hard drive.'── quoted from the link in the above post.
Does that mean my free upgrade license will remain valid after replacing the motherboard or hard drive?

    :)

It depends on Microsoft's definition of "device", whether a replacement motherboard or hard drive constitutes a new device or not, or whether the free upgrade constitutes a retail replacement for an upgrade from a retail qualifying OS, and an OEM upgrade from an OEM qualifying OS, and whether the free upgrade is a "like for like" replacement as in the retail and OEM examples above, or just a "for the lifetime of the device" upgrade which has also been reported in official Microsoft correspondence.

If it comes to a phone call to a real Microsoft activation agent, then I think that you stand a good chance of success in activating your free upgrade at least the first time. If you just follow the algorithm built into the troubleshooter, I reckon that you may be less successful.

Perhaps if this new protocol is tested then we may discover which details of digital licensing are actually most important for maintaining activation over transfers for this free upgrade.

I figure that the Microsoft Account registration is probably the major component in the equation.

  6. The license has always remained valid after changing only the hard drive. I have done that several times, including the latest change to replace the HDD with an SDD, and every time, the activation remained intact.

I think it's still on Insider version only, if it works it should be included in Anniversary issue August 2nd.

A lot of Windows 10 Anniversary Update features are implemented in Insider version, that's what it's for.
