A device which does not exist was specified – Disk error on Windows 10

If when you try to open a disk in File Explorer, or you open Disk Management tool on your Windows 10 device, to initialize a disk, but you encounter the error message A device which does not exist was specified, then this post will help you.

    When you encounter this issue, you’ll receive the following full error message;

    Location is not available

    <DriveLetter>:\ is not accessible.
A device which does not exist was specified.

Affected PC users may also notice that in Device Manager, the problematic disk is listed as Unknown Disk, but it still works correctly when you click on the properties.

If you’re faced with this issue, you can try our recommended solutions below in no particular order and see if that helps to resolve the issue.

    1. Check connectors
    2. Assign Full Permissions on disk
    3. Uninstall/Update disk drivers
    4. Run CHKDSK
    5. Format disk to NTFS
    6. Replace Hard Drive

Let’s take a look at the description of the process involved concerning each of the listed solutions.

    1] Check connectors

Make sure that the power connector is firmly attached to the drive. If none are available, maybe even try another SATA power connector from an unused drive, like a DVD.

If all connection is properly secure but the error is unresolved, proceed with the next solution.

2] Assign Full Permissions on disk

This solution requires you to assign full permissions on the inaccessible disk. Try the next solution if the issue persists.

    3] Uninstall/Update disk drivers

First, you need to uninstall the disk drivers and then reboot your computer. On boot, Windows will automatically reinstall the disk drivers. Check if the issue is resolved, otherwise, you can try updating the disk drivers and see if that helps.

You can either update disk drivers manually via the Device Manager, or you can get the driver updates on the Optional Updates section under Windows Update.

You may also download the latest version of the driver from the disk manufacturer’s website.

    4] Run CHKDSK

You can run CHKDSK to repair bad sectors if that’s what’s triggering the error.

    5] Format disk to NTFS

Make sure the inaccessible disk is in NTFS format, otherwise you need to format the disk to NTFS or simply convert the disk to NTFS without losing data.

    6] Replace Hard Drive

At this point, if you have exhausted all possible avenues, you should consider replacing the disk.

    Hope something helps!

AMD Chipset Install Error: 1316, The Specified Account Already Exists

In Device manager, most of those from that list are signed as Microsoft drivers, probably for compatibility purposes, just like disk drive drivers.
These are only ones from that list that I can find that is signed as AMD.

AMD Chipset Install Error: 1316, The Specified Account Already Exists

    @CountMike,

    Thanks.

The link, here: How To Fix "Error 1316. The Specified Account Already Exists" Issue in Windows 10

It's a bit too generic. The first step, regedit the software key by deleting all "AMD" seems a bit fraught with peril. *Wink

I'll try to uninstall the v2.04.04.111 via the control panel and then install v2.10.13.408.

The Chipset IO folder you posted an image of has 22 sub-directories. Yet, the installer only shows 6 items being updated (Power Plan, GPIO, PSP, SMBus, PCI Device, and GPIO (Promentory) ). That's where I'm puzzled by the manual option. If I open up device manager, I'm thinking I should go through a LOT of them, but I don't know exactly which ones (devices in device manager) correspond to the 6 items that AMD updater shows on its update (the image with the selectable six items).

    Have I made sense?

    Thanks,
    Ken
