  1. A new KB3150513?

I just got notified of Windows maintenance waiting to be downloaded: KB3150513. All the hits I found on the web were from May and were about Win10 upgrade stuff for earlier releases of Windows. Is KB3150513 being reissued for some other purpose - like automatic installation of the AU or something?

    :)

  4. A new KB3150513?

    Hi:

Yep, you beat me to the punch. I'm on 1511 with Upgrades deferred and WU set to notify.
I was just notified about this patch and found the same info on the net, as well.

I share your suspicion about its purpose on a box already running Win10.
I have a feeling it's going to be a way to force the AU, or at least nag about it.

I'm holding off for now and will likely have to fire up the new process for hiding updates for this one.

    Sigh.
MS sure has turned most of us into cynics over the past few years.
    "Fear the patch"!*Rolleyes

    Sigh.

  6. Hi:

Sorry to bump this, but does anyone know:
    • Why this patch would be offered to an OEM Win10 box?
    • What it does on a Win10 system (as it seems to be one of those "Win10 Update" patches for 7/8/8.1 from May 2016)?
    • Whether it can be safely installed without its surreptitiously forcing AU installation?
    • Or whether it should be hidden?

I have deferred AU (1607) and wish to do so a bit longer.

But I am being nagged by WU about this KB3150513.

    Any insight/advice greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!
    MM

  7. I have an old PC I use primarily for testing such things. I'll install KB3150513 there (after taking an image backup) and see what it does. I may not get to it for a day or two, though.

    A new KB3150513?

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3150513

This update will be offered only if the following prerequisite updates are installed:

This update provides the latest set of definitions for compatibility diagnostics that are performed on the system. The updated definitions will help enable Microsoft and its partners to ensure compatibility for all customers who want to install the latest Windows operating system. Installing this update also makes sure that the latest Windows operating system version is correctly offered through Windows Update, based on compatibility results.

  9. Hi, @Phone Man:

Yes, I neglected to mention that I had already read that KB.

    It's characteristically vague.
It seems to suggest that it might somehow enable some sort of unwelcome AU update for those of us on 1511 who are deferring it.
This is a new (less than 2 months old) OEM Win10 Pro box and it is fully patched except for AU.
This KB was originally issued in MAY 2016 for Win7/8/8.1.
The reissuance now to include Win10 1511 seems suspicious.
(BTW it did not arrive on Patch Tuesday. It was out-of-band, arriving 2 days ago, on a Thursday.)

Why does a Win10 box need it, if it's not somehow designed to enable a stealth download or install of AU?

I am surprised to see that this thread has nearly 2500 views since it was posted, but only a hushed silence from our many Win10 staff and experts (except yourself).*Sad

    It smells very fishy.

I am prepared to hide it for now, and then to unhide it when I am ready to upgrade to AU.

    Thank you!

  10. I read that as "Installing this update also makes sure that the latest Windows operating system version will be shoved down your throat if you have a compatible platform.

  11. I installed it on my "test" PC. It didn't do anything obvious. I run that PC only an hour or so a week so I may never notice any timer-based effects. I guess I'll be brave and install it on my regularly used PC.

    A new KB3150513?

After that update and my PC rebooted I lost the IE 11 icon on my Tackbar. So I put it back and now am having strange problems with IE 11 Toolbar and Norton's Search and Toolbar. I think MS did it to me. Anyone have a clue?

You could try running SFC /Scannow in your Command prompt Admin, then see if it finds problems and repairs them. Always reboot after running the command.

2nd option would be to use Nortons uninstall app, that you get from them. reboot, then reinstall Nortons.
These are just ideas, as I have Nortons and have no problems with IE11 or Nortons.

Thanks oldmike, I did everything I know to do, including un-installing and reinstalling Norton's. I for got run SFC /Scannow, so will do that; but it gets real tiring, The problem is I just went away from my PC for a few hours and when I returned the problem was there. When stuff like that happens I get suspicious and of course it takes time to run all the sans and all just to see no problems. That is what really gets old, when a problem appears that is no problem to scans. Oh well, they have us by the proverbial nuts.
