A newbie question on Windows To Go

Yes I have. I wanted to test WTG for someone else on this forum. All works fine.

What I have not got working (and no-one answers my questions on this alas) is I can't get an install made on vhdx to boot in Hyper-V and then back native on vhdx.

No RS1 release will do this. Every previous Windows worked fine. I'm hoping it will pass.

However if anyone could make a VM using a VHDX in Hyper-V, boot it, then boot it Native twice, then boot it again in Hyper-V I'd be interested as I think it is not possible after 10586. The first native boot works fine, the second boot fails and I can not fix it at all.

This might be similar to your problem perhaps?

Using Wintousb (Web Server's Default Page), I have installed Home version 14571 (using iso created from the install.esd file) on an external hard drive in Uefi mode, and also on a standard 32GB flash drive in legacy bios mode, and they both work perfectly although booting is a little slow on the flash drive (fast san cruzer extreme), which for some reason does not boot in usb3.

    Hi there

Thanks Guys --that's all I needed to know -- so it does work -- I'need need to investigate why mine fails on boot. - And I DO appreciate replies and people taking time to test stuff --that's why these Forums are a real winner -plus the posters of course -not forgetting the huge amount of work the Mods do too.

    Cheers

Jimbo. In addition you need to make sure your firmware is going to see it as bootable.

One of the WTG conditions is that you must be able to boot from USB. This isn't really (exactly) required. You do though need a boot loader though.

I know you have been playing with home servers and so on and they might not boot from any old disk. You could use rEFInd or GRUB as the bootloader on a disk that will work and then point it (if it doesn't find it automatically) at your install.

If you are doing that making a BIOS based windows install (with the Windows bootloader and everything on the C drive) is easier.

Just make one partition - copy in the contents of your iso with dism, bcdboot and there you are. Tell your loader to look for it if it doesn't find it automatically (I use rEFINd and it finds all Windows bootloaders automatically wherever they are but that does depend on your UEFI firmware - you might have to add it to the NVRAM)

Once you have got that working you can add the other answer files to make it the same as a WTG.
