Windows 10: A possible solution to Wifi USB adapter constantly disconnecting in Windows 10

Since I have bought a new computer I have been using a wireless USB adapter that I previously used on my old windows 7 PC, it's worth mentioning that this new PC I have requires a fair bit of power. Anyway I had been having this problem where it would constantly drop out at seemingly random times when others wouldn't, though it seemed to do it more frequently when it was requiring more power. I had done everything in the book, including turning off the option to automatically turn off the specific device in "device manager". In this thread someone mentions something about sleep & power settings and a fix being in there so I did a bit of poking around there and all of my settings were already set to off, which is what the dude or chick recommended. So I was a bit confused and clicked on additional power settings and then saw the two options of both High performance and balanced performance, mine was on high and I didn't want to change it so I looked in "change plan settings" and then "change advanced power settings". Low and behold in there is a setting labeled "USB settings" with another one under it called "USB selective suspend setting" which was enabled, since I have disabled it I haven't noticed any drops from my wifi. I'm not 100% sure this is a solution yet as it's only been 12ish hours and I haven't been at my PC the whole time but the logic of it seems to fit.

The pathway is: Power & sleep settings> Additional power settings> Change plan settings> Change advanced power settings> USB settings> USB selective suspend setting> Disable


So it seems that a possible solution is to turn off the setting "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" in the properties section of your adapter in device manager, and to follow the pathway above as well if that doesn't work.

I don't know how to share this to other older threads because it won't let me reply to them but I hope this is able to find those who have had the same issue as me.

• If you have an identical laptop try comparing the wifi and security settings of the one that does not disconnect with the one that does. If you find any differences change the settings of the one that does not work to the one that does.

• If you do not have an identical laptop see this post and the three replies for possible solutions: Wifi disconnects every 5 minutes.

USB Wireless adapter not connecting to Wifi

Hello

I am having trouble making my new USB Wifi Adapter to work. The drivers are working fine but the issue is it is not connecting to wifi.

1. I am using Windows 10
2. The adapter which I am trying to work is Alfa AWUS036NHA 150Mbps
3. I have also one USB mini wifi adapter attached to my other USB through which I am currently using internet

From the above screenshot, the Wi-Fi 2 is which I am trying to connect. When I right-click on Wi-Fi 2 and click on Connect/Disconnect, It shows the already connected Wifi through USB mini adapter.

When I Disable WiFi and try to connect through WiFi 2 then it shows an error "Change settings, such as making a connection metered"

The device utility does not show any Wifi available connections though there are 2-3 wifi connection is there.








any idea how can I make connect to internet using my new Alfa AWUS036NHA 150Mbps Wireless USB Adaptor - Wi Fi 2 on Windows 10 ?

Method 1: Troubleshoot

Windows 10 has a built-in troubleshooter to check and fix issues with hardware and devices. I would suggest you to run this troubleshooter to check if the issue is with device. Refer these steps:

• Press Windows key +X, select Control panel.
• Change the view by option on the top right to Large icons.
• Click on troubleshooting and click on the view all option on the left panel.
• Run the Hardware and devices and Internet Connection
  troubleshooter.

Method 2: Download and install the latest firmware updates for the Wi-Fi adapter

Follow these steps to un-install the drivers:

• On the search bar type “ Device Manager”
• On the left pane locate “Network Adapter” and expand by clicking on it
• Right on the “ Wireless adapter” option and click “Uninstall’
• Download the latest Wireless network adapter driver setup file from the manufacturer’s website and install it.
