A possibly dead USB drive taking up 100% active time that cannot be accessed or reformatted

So, I have an interesting problem that I cannot quite figure out how to deal with it. Let's get started:To give some background here: Disk 6 is a portable USB drive that contains Ubuntu which explains E:, F:, H:, and I: drives' existence. K: drive is a "general" folder that can be accessed by both Ubuntu and Windows 10. This thumb-drive had been plugged into my PC for quite a while before it one day spontaneously failed which I assume would be months ago, I'm not even sure anymore. Fortunately there isn't too many important data inside it so I don't mind reformatting it to make it function

    :)

How to reformat USB Recovery Drive

Part of the commands and results were missing from the image.

Open adminstrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    diskpart
    list disk
    select disk #
(replace # with the disk number for the flash drive)
    attributes disk clear readonly
    exit

If the above steps work then you are set.

A possibly dead USB drive taking up 100% active time that cannot be accessed or reformatted

    Accessing a Hard Drive...

    ...from a dead laptop.

My girlfriend's laptop recently s**t the bed, and she has a lot of photos she would like to retrieve from it. I used a USB to IDE cable to try, but it's a no go. Her drive has Windows XP Home on it, and my system has Win7 x64. The computer recognizes the drive, but it wants me to initialize it, which I think may format it.

I don't know if it's formatted FAT32 or NTFS. Are there any suggestions on accessing the drive to pull all this data off of it?
