  3. Windows 11 "Access Denied Press Continue to try and Gain Access" not working.

    Hi Tim,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I'm Hahn and I'm here to help you with your concern.

I’m sorry to hear that you are having trouble accessing your external drive on Windows 11. There are several possible causes and solutions for this issue. Here are some of them:

You may not have the administrator privileges on your current user account. You can try to set your account to administrator by following these steps:

    1. Press Win + R to open Run. Type control userpasswords2 and click OK.
    2. On the User Accounts window, check the box beside Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer. If there's none, skip this step.
    3. Then, select your account and click the Properties button below it.
    4. Next, go to the Group Membership tab. Choose Administrator from the menu, then click Apply and OK.
    5. Restart your computer and see if it resolves the problem. Otherwise, move to the next step.
Your third-party antivirus software may be blocking access to the external drive. You can try to temporarily disable your antivirus program and see if you can access or install the program. If that works, you may need to add an exception for the external drive in your antivirus settings.

You may need to reset the user permissions for the external drive by using this command in Command Prompt (run as administrator): ICACLS * /reset /t /c /q. This will reset permissions for all user accounts making it easier to use external hard drives and remove access denied errors.

You may need to enable the built-in administrator account on Windows 11 by using this command in Command Prompt (run as administrator): net user administrator /active: yes. This will unlock the hidden admin account that has root access and can open any file and folder on your computer. You can log off the current account and log in with the admin account to access the external drive.

Once you're done with the Administrator account, log off and sign in to your main account again. Type this command: net user administrator /active: no. This will disable the Administrator account.

You may need to take ownership of the external drive by following these steps: Open Command Prompt through Windows search by pressing Win + S and typing CMD. Click the Command Prompt from the result.

    1. In the command Prompt, type or paste the following command and press Enter after each:
      • takeown /f "path_to_folder" /r /d y
      • icacls "path_to_folder" /grant administrators:F /
Note: You need to replace the “path_to_folder” section with the actual path to the inaccessible file or folder.

Restart your computer once you’re done with the steps above to check if the problem is resolved. But usually, after running these commands, you should have access to the files and folders.

It's important to note that any changes you make to the file permissions or ownership on the external drive could potentially cause issues with the drive or the files on it. It's always a good idea to make a backup of the drive before making any changes, and to proceed with caution when modifying file permissions or ownership.

I hope one of these methods works for you. If there is anything not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Your Sincerely

Access is denied when trying to unlock a local account in Windows 11. Why is that?

LAPTOP is not accessible ..... Access is denied.

I am trying to share a folder on a LAPTOP. I have other a number of other systems that have folders Shared and they work fine, but with this one I get the error "LAPTOP is not accessible ..... Access is denied." when I try to access it from a different Win10 system. So I went thru the entire "How to Share Files and Folders Over a Network in Windows 10" tutorial step by step. File and Print Sharing is enabled, SMB1.0 client & server are running, and Everyone has Full Access to the Share. Still get the error. I have tried it with the Network Public and Private, with the same result. Any suggestions ? Microsoft Windows 10 Home Version 10.0.19042 Build 19042
