Windows 10: Accessing/resetting Microsoft account ona laptop

I have a unique situation I am trying to help a friend with. She has a Windows laptop her husband set up for her, on which both of them had Administrator accounts. He used his Microsoft account to log on to his account with. Unfortunately, he is in jail now and may be there for several years. There is critical information related to taxes, their business, and their mortgage which she needs access to and he is uncooperative. We've tried resetting his password in both the control panel and at the command line, but it won't work because the laptop is not authoritative on this account.


It has become apparent that in order to access his account without breaking the law, some legal procedures will need to be set in motion. She has a lawyer. Does anyone know how one would begin such a process, who to reach out to at Microsoft about this? I found this link, which has some info but is more geared toward situations where a user has passed or otherwise become incapacitated. It says to send requests/subpoenas to Microsoft with no guarantee access will be granted. Does anyone have a recommended first point of contact, or any other suggestions?

Edge Search Does Not Permit Change of Region


I got these suggestions from the Microsoft Community forum.No. 1 worked for me:

Thank you for posting the query on Microsoft Community. I am glad to assist you on this.
We have reproduce the issue here and we are able to access non-regional search for google using Microsoft Edge.
I would suggest you to try the below steps and check if it helps.
Step 1:
Clear browsing data option of Microsoft Edge and check if you face the issue. To do so perform the steps below.

1. Click on the More actions icon next to the feedback icon present on top right corner of the Project Spartan homepage.
2. Select Settings and click on Choose what to clear.
3. Check the boxes Browsing history, Cookies and saved website data and Cached data and files and click on Clear.

Step 2:
I suggest you to create a new user account and check if the issue occurs.

1. Go to Settings.
2. Choose Accounts and then select Family and other users.
3. Select add someone else on this PC.
4. Enter a user name and hit next.
5. Click on Finish.
6. Sign out from the current Account and Log into the new account.

Step 3:
It could also happen because of network issue. I suggest you to try with different network connection and check if it helps.

I'm sure it is posted in the articles provided but a Microsoft Account allows you to reset your password online.

If you have a local account, and it is the only admin account, and you forget password you need to do some special steps to get access to device again.
