    Accessing the Java log?

I've had Java installed on my PCs for decades. But I'm wondering if it actually does anything. If not I'll probably uninstall it.

I've just switched on the 'Enable logging' option via Settings > Control Panel > Java

But on trying to access the log file at
    C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\log
    I got the message:
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

However, using an elevated command prompt I was able to use dir *.* which reports no files in that folder.

So, my question : is there a way to trigger some (trivial) Java activity so that I can test I can access it in future?

    Windows Mobile - Java

I just got an HTC Touch Pro. I cant access hotmail or windows live saying that I need to have Java enabled. Contacted AT&T and HTC and told me that WIndows Mobile comes with limited or no java support. How can I access Java applications and sites that require
java script with my WIndows Mobile? Is there a way to enable it or a software to download?

Virus attack on Nokia 5300 signal?

No Java app can take over the signal on a 5300 or any S40 device, as far as I know. There is simply no such access to the hardware from within the Java environment (also called "sandbox" to illustrate how Java is limited/restricted from accessing native
operating system or hardware by the Java environment, Java virtual machine).

If you updated the firmware, then - for sure - any last traces of any Java apps you had installed would be gone permanently and for good.

Check another SIM card. Check that your SIM card works in another phone. If nothing seems to help, have your phone repaired by a Nokia repair center.

    Accessing the Java log?

Java is used in many programs and all browsers, some won't run if Java is not there.

If you use internet based banking (online bank) it is often used to verified your identity, so do not uninstall it!

About the log you have enabled, it is a log for debug, when problems arise. You have to wait until some event happen,
such as it updating to new version, as it did 2 weeks ago. The log will not be created before something happens.

Check that you have the newest version:

Thanks Gordon, appreciate the tip about online banking. I do use that, although Firefox doesn't work well with it so I switch to Chrome or IE for that. I'll leave Java installed!

Browsers don't use Java, they use Javascript, a totally different language. I have not had Java installed for over 3 years and have not found any need for it yet.

I suggest you uninstall it. If it's ever needed you'll be prompted for it.

    Thanks Ztruker.
@Gordon7: Perhaps you made the same mistake as me, in confusing Java and JavaScript?

The link given (Verge) is a 2 years old story! Java is still needed by a lot of programs and netbank verifications.

Only Chrome and Edge don't use it, so if your bank use it, you will have to use IE or FF, Pale Moon a.s.o.

Sorry, no browser uses or requires Java. Applications that run in the browser space may need it, but I have not found one in over three years.

Edge and Google Chrome do not use Java and now Firefox and Pale Moon no longer use Java either in their latest versions. If you find a site that needs Java, you have to use IE11.

  12. Just to clarify: the Java browser plugin, which runs Java applets in your browser, is separate from the Java runtime environment, which runs Java applications in your operating system. Both are part of the Oracle Java installation.

Applets are slated for deprecation but some legacy sites like certain banks/governments may still use them because they never bothered to move to newer technology.

If you have any Java applications then you will still need to have Java installed.

If you are not sure if your banking sites use Java applets or if you have any Java applications then go ahead and uninstall it and see if anything breaks.

    Accessing the Java log?

Here in Denmark I still use it for verification in Public service and my netbank and it is supported in Pale Moon and FF, IE11 a.o.

Version SE 8u151 is the newest version from 17 okt. 2017, version 8 is supported until sep. 2018. After that time a new version
will have to be installed. Next update comes around 16 Jan. 2018.
