Windows 10: Account pin works for signon but not for verify

My MS account four digit pin works fine for sign in with new laptop. But anything I try involving my account elsewhere requires account verify. When entering the pin I get prompted for a seven digit pin? At the same screen, If I request a new pin via email, the request is apparently accepted but no pin is emailed.

opening recently upgraded to windows 10..

When I open windows 10 with my pin or password , I get a message that Edge cannot be opened with my signon and I must use another account to signon. How do I fix this?

Method 1:
Run the System File Checker tool.

Method 2: Run the Hardware and devices troubleshooter.

• Click the Start menu, and click SETTINGS.
• Type Troubleshooting on the search box.
• In the new window, click Hardware and Sound.
• Click Hardware and Devices and run the troubleshooter.

Method 3: Update drivers in Windows 10.

• Select the Start button, type Device Manager, and select it from the list of results.
• Expand one of the categories to find the name of your device, then right-click (or tap and hold) it, and select Update Driver Software.
• Select Search automatically for updated driver software.
• If Windows doesn't find a new driver, you can try looking for one on the device manufacturer's website and follow their instructions.

If these steps don't work, try reinstalling the driver: Open Device Manager, right-click (or tap and hold) the name of the device, and select Uninstall. Restart your PC and Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver.

Sorry, I found the problem. The email with a cryptic pin number was being mailed but was marked somewhere as spam. I'm trying to figure how a message with a title like it has, very legit looking was treated as spam. I had filtering in Kaspersky turned off so not sure how.
I will add that no way am I using such a number to save time when logging in. There is still an issue here in that my four digit pin was working during sign in.
