In the windows advance recovery menu you were able to test reset, restore, startup repair

What happens when you select startup options?

  3. Reset and Restore don't work nor does Image recovery. Startup Repair fails and points me to error log. Startup Options (Settings?) allows me to restart to view the various further restart options but none of them do anything. See my post 6
    thanks

Sorry, but I don't really understand how to proceed with Kyhi's Custom recovery disk thread. Are there idiot proof instructions somewhere in the thread?

  7. When Ive tried to boot from the ISO I created on my old XP machine from a usb flash or from dvd, it just hasn't loaded any options. Just goes straight back to "Preparing Automatic Repair", "Diagnosing your PC" followed by returning to Windows RE and "Your PC did not start correctly"
As I said, a friend is doing me a recovery USB using a windows 10 machine and he media creation tool but Im not optimistic it will make much difference

  9. I've tried putting the USB first in the boot list via f2 and I've tried putting the disk drive first and both times it just goes straight back to the automatic repair loop. I've also set the boot to Legacy as I read that that was required to get it to boot from USB and Ive been to f12 and tried to force it to boot straight away from either the USB or disk and every time nothing happens just back into the loop

In order to break the cycle I think you will need a way to boot to a device as you were not able to use any of the windows advanced troubleshooting options other than adminstrator X:

Good luck. I posted a note to Dalchina to see if he would have some options. He's the expert I referred to earlier on the bootable rescue: Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable Rescue Disk - Windows 10 Forums

If the USB boot is not working do you have an optical drive? Maybe that can rise to the top in the boot order? Or if one USB drive (USB 3 port) is not working try a USB 2 port. Somehow the boot order in the bios has to be modified so you can boot to something.

Ok well good news is that it recognised the USB with the new recovery file but after working my way through the registry repair instructions In post #7, everything seemed good but when I exited and restarted without the USB key plugged in, it went back to my friend the Automatic Repair screen

  14. So what should I do now? Should I just do a re-install and if so will there be a way to keep my files?
    thanks
