Excuse my ignorance but how do I go about doing that?

What will happen if I simply click Install Now here? Will I get the option to save my files?

    thanks

No! If you select "Install now" when you boot from USB it will do a clean install and overwrite everything.

Assuming you don't already have a backup, if you plug in an external drive you can copy the files you want to it (either using a rescue disk or just from command prompt using cp command). If you then do a clean install you can copy them back but you'll still need to re-install any programs you have.

Try the sfc /scannow command again first. In post #4 it looks like you are running it on the wrong boot partition (D).

I'm guessing when you boot normally your C drive is shown as ~800GB so you should run it over C not D. D is (probably) your Lenovo recovery partition as 25GB is too big for system reserved.

In the sfc tutotial there is this note
So try sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C:\ /offwindir=C:\windows and see if it works.

The only option that you should look at on that image is the lower left: repair your computer.

That notepad trick is clever! I would have used something like this (if M was the USB drive) which is more fiddly Code: X:\Windows\system32> xcopy /herky C:\Users\<whoever>\Documents M:\backup\Documents\ X:\Windows\system32> xcopy /herky C:\Users\<whoever>\Pictures M:\backup\Pictures\ etc[/quote] Anyways as long as you have somehow copied all the documents & files you want to keep to external drive you can do clean install.

  9. Have run chkdsk c: /f /r /x again and seems to have done some stuff although I'm pretty sure this is what it managed the previous times I tried.
Is there anything else worth trying on the back of these results or should I just proceed with trying to copy the personal files I want to save and then reinstall?

    thanks again

The bad clusters cannot be repaired in X:
Use a hard drive enclosure to save your files.
While it is attached as an external drive see if you can use sea tools or other software to check the status of the drive (SMART, short and long generic tests)
If the drive is ok then use diskpart to clean it.
Return the drive back to the computer and perform a clean install of the os with windows 10 iso.
Then install up to date drivers.
Install applications and restore your user files.
Then use Macrium to create an image.

Hi, sorry to hear of your difficulty.

Please respond using the numbers 1-6 below- makes it easier. Thanks!

    1. History. No one's asked the history as far as I can see- what led to this situation? Was your PC working one day then not the next?

    2. Here I note C: is not listed as 'Boot'
    Attachment 141632

    Compare mine:
    Attachment 141633

I have to admit I'm struggling to interpret your partitions.

    You have 2 FAT32 partitions, but one's 1000Mb, with a label LRS_ESP. The other is SYSTEM_DRV FAT32 260Mb Hidden
I'm looking for a FAT32 partition that might convince me this is an EFI configuration.

You do have a 450Mb partition that is probably the Windows recovery partition.

    3. As you are stuck in a boot loop, repairing system files on C: doesn't seem likely to help, especially given the possibility your Window partition isn't identified correctly.

    4. To clarify this, and to give other options, and noting you have a DVD drive, please download and burn Kyhi's bootable repair disk to a DVD (mentioned above- perhaps you now have one) - or if you have it on a USB drive and can boot from that, use that.
    I find DVD's simpler!

It's available from the top of the Software and Apps section (a link was given before).

Make sure you can boot from that.

    5. Windows Partition
When that's done, run Minitool Partition Wizard and post a screenshot like this:
    Attachment 141634
Making sure all the text is visible.

Now rt click your Windows partition and click Check File System and report the result.

    6. Check your disk
Still using Kyhi's disk, run HD Tune and post a screenshot of its GUI like this:
    Attachment 141635

I'd guess the most probable outcome will be you'll need to re-install- there's perhaps one possibility left.

  12. Thanks for the help Dalchina,
To be honest, I've very nearly finished copying everything I need from the laptop to an external hard drive and then I was simply going to do a fresh install. The laptop had been randomly shutting down for a few weeks so it would probably benefit from starting anew unless you think otherwise?

To answer your questions as far as I can, I believe it was while trying to install the Lenovo Solutions Client ironically enough that it crashed and then wouldn't restart.
As for why the partitions are as they are, I'm afraid I have no idea. It was bought as a refurb from PC world as far as I remember and I've never tampered with the partitions as I wouldn't know how to. I downloaded Windows 10 when it was first made available for download.
    Thanks

  14. So I've backed up my Docs, Videos, Pictures and Music folders and have started 'Install Now' but surprisingly it is offering me the option to 'Upgrade: Install Windows and keep files, settings and apps' or 'Custom' where I presume everything is wiped. Given I now have a backup of the important stuff, should I choose the latter? Does 'upgrade' risk my dodgy registry file being retained?
    thanks

  15. Main reason I ask is that Step 12 and 13 are a little over my head. I don't know if I want a BIOS or UEFI install as I don't really know what that means nor do I know if I should be deleting partitions...sorry
