Windows 10: Activate single language edition with multi language key?

I downloaded the Win10 Home single language ISO for a clean install on a new build PC and skipped the activation step during install. Now I need to activate. If I purchase a copy of Windows 10 Home in store or digitally, will I be able to use the product key in my current install without need to re-install?

I tried to phone MS support about this and they were utterly useless!

How to upgrade to a higher edition of Windows 10 such as Pro or Enterprise

My new HP laptop came with "Windows 10 Home Single Language" installed. If I upgrade this, will the new OS be "Windows 10 Pro Single Language"? or will it be a multi-language version? I need multi-language capability.

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Community.

If you are using a Single Language Edition in Windows 10 Home then you will not have options to change the language other than the one which it came with.

So please check with that and I suggest you to purchase a Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro without a Single language edition to have the options to change the languages.

Activation doesn't depend on changing the languages. As mentioned above if it single language edition then after activation also you will have no options to change the languages.

As long as you buy the version you installed they you should be fine.

 

That is the problem.. I installed the Home Single Language version (by mistake) but this is not for sale - only the regular Home edition.

 

You could try and buy a 7/8 single language licence but quite rare I suspect.


Easier probably to just download normal multi language version.

 

Single language will not accept a Home (non SL) key. If you buy a Pro key though, and use the change product key option, it should upgrade to Pro and activate. I've gone from regular Home to Pro that way. I've never done it going from the SL version, so I say "should". Or just start over and clean install the regular Home version with the Home key you buy.

 

You can't upgrade Single Language to standard multi-language.

 

Not Home to Home, Home to Pro might work though? If he buys a Pro key there would be no harm in trying. If it doesn't work, just clean install. Assuming you haven't already tried it and confirmed it doesn't work. *Wink

 

What version of Windows did your PC have prior to installing windows 10 SL ???

Nevermind - New build...

Do you have a Retail Copy of Windows 7 or better ??? That you could transfer the Retail license to the new build ??

If so transfer the prior Retail OS to the new build and then upgrade for free to Windows 10..
