Windows 10: activation and upgrade

I have a windows 10 pro mini computer. When I first set it up I thought I went through the activation phase of the set up. However now I am receiving a message telling me my operating system has not been activated. I am also getting a message telling me i have to upgrade to be able to activate my operating system.


My questions are:


Why am I able to use my computer if it is not activated?


How much will it cost me to activate One website said the cost was $200, and that's more than I want to spend at the moment?


What happens if I do upgrade?


I want to stay with windows 10 pro, if I upgrade will I no longer have windows 10 pro?


If I upgrade will I lose all my programs Apps and files?


Here is some more information:


I bought the computer new from a seller on Amazon.


I have never made any change to the hardware except for connecting a monitor, a combination keyboard and mouse, and speakers.


I have never dropped the device, nor has the device experienced any other trauma or misuse.

Activating Windows 10 after upgrade

I would like to inform that as you are using an Genuine Windows 7 in your system,
Windows 10 will automatically be activated online and create a digital entitlement for your device.

If you still face issues with Activation after upgrading to Windows 10, suggest you to activate the Operating System through phone by following the steps below:

• Press “Windows key + R” and type “slui 4” and press Enter.
• Select the Region from the list and click Next.
• Call the Toll-Free number provided on top and can activate via phone.

In your shoes I would

1. Take a backup of the OS drive with Macrium Reflect, as suggested
2. Download the ISO and do an Upgrade install (step 7 in this tutorial)

Macrium gives you a way back if the upgrade doesn't work, and I also think that doing an Upgrade install is probably likely to be your quickest route to being activated on Windows 10 by the deadline.

Once activated, you can consider doing a clean install later but without the time pressure.

 

Can't upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Pro

I suggest you to download and create an installation media for Windows 10 Pro form the link provided below:

Download Windows 10

After the installation media is created, suggest you to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro from the installation media. When the upgrade asks for product key, enter the product key purchased for Windows 10 Pro. If it does not accept, suggest you to skip the activation
step. After the Operating System is installed, suggest you to activate by phone by following the steps below:

• Press “Windows key + R” and type “slui 4” and press Enter.
• Select the Region from the list and click Next.
• Call the Toll-Free number provided on top and can activate via phone.
