Windows 10: Activation Error : 0x80004005

My windows got an update on 16/17th July after which it asked me to activate my windows. I tried troubleshooting - it doesn't work. I looked for advice on the Microsoft Forums:


Method 1:


Try to run the Windows update troubleshooter and see if it fix the issue:


* Press Windows Key then type ‘troubleshoot’ and hit Enter

* Select “View all” on the left panel and run “Windows update” troubleshooter from the list

* Click Advanced, ensure to check Apply repairs automatically and also select Run as administrator

* Click Next and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the troubleshooting.


Once done, check if it allows you install Windows Updates without any errors.


Method 2:


Step :1


a. Press Windows Key + X.
b. Click on ‘Command Prompt (Admin)

Note: Click ‘Yes’ if it prompts for UAC(User Account Control).
c. Type following commands into the command prompt one after the other

net stop wuauserv

net stop bits

net stop cryptsvc


Keep Command Prompt window opened.


Step :2


Rename Windows Update folders


At the command prompt, type the following commands, and then press Enter after each command:


ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 Catroot2.old
ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

Then type the following, commands and then press ENTER after each command:

net start wuauserv

net start bits

net start cryptsvc


The catroot and SoftwareDistribution commands give an error with the message," Either a duplicate file is present or it could not be found."

I tried calling the helpline and it disconnects as soon as I ask to speak with a customer care representative.

I have looked over many other posts about this, all with the same error code, but with a different problem.

I have a computer thats a few years old, it has an ABIT kn8-sli motherboard, and its running off windows XP.

I was having problem with the hard drive before I gave up on it awhile back, and now I have come back and resolved that problem, but now when I get to the login screen and type in the password it says its in need of an update, then when it asks me if I want to update I click Yes, and then it says it won't work due to error 0x80004005.

The only operating system I have currently is windows 7. Do I need to go buy a new OS or is this recoverable?
