    Activation lost after hardware replacement

It's an old computer that originally came with Windows 7 preinstalled and I later upgraded it to Windows 10 when it was still free and then upgraded again to Windows 11.A few weeks ago a power surge completely fried the PSU, motherboard, CPU and Blu-Ray drive. I replaced them all with cheap 2nd hand parts from AliExpress, and now Windows reports that it's not activated anymore. I've never logged-in to that computer with a Microsoft account, only local accounts. Is there any way to recover the license? tbh a new Windows license is more expensive than the value of that computer.

    :)

How can I activate Windows after hardware replacement?

I replaced all the hardware but I have legal activated Windows 10 that I received after upgrading from Windows 8. I now cannot activate my system.

What are the steps to fix?

Activation problems after hardware changes and reinstallations.

    Hi Meli,

Thank you for posting the query on Microsoft Community.

I do appreciate your efforts and time.

Was Windows 10 activated before re-installing it?

Along with the suggestions provided by Greg, you can also refer the steps below.

The only hardware changes that can negatively impact activation status once you upgrade to free version are the changes to the:

    • CPU
    • TPM
    • Motherboard replacement
The following changes are examples of hardware changes that will NOT impact the activation status:

    • HDD/SSD
    • Video card
    • Adding extra memory
If you replace the CPU, TPM, or Motherboard you may have to re-activate but this will not require a purchase of Windows 10.
