Windows 10: Active windows all moved to main monitor after sleep/off

Active windows all moved to main monitor after sleep/off

I am running Windows 10 connected to two monitors via Display Ports. I have set the monitors to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity, but not the PC. Every time I return to the displays and switch them back on again all the active windows have moved to the
main monitor, and I have to relocate them again between the two monitors. I suspect this is a Windows problem - there are several threads about similar things happening for both Windows 7 and Windows 10. Can anyone suggest a fix for this - please explain it
in layperson's terms as far as possible, as I'm not a techie.

All desktop windows are move/push-over to Main display after waking-up from sleep mode

I'm happy to find these as work-around, very helpful at least to my systems scenario.

All my desktop windows retained the exact location in both built-in and external monitor, before and after Sleep mode.

Step 1. Press the below keys before the computer turn to sleep mode

(typically, this is prior to leaving my computer for a break)

• Windows logo key + M

Step 2. Press the below keys after signing back or activating from sleep mode

• Windows logo key + Shift + M

 

Windows from HDMI monitor move to DP monitor when monitors go to sleep.

According to your description, I knew that you have two external monitors of similar model connected via HDMI and DP, but when the system goes to sleep, the DP-connected monitor goes straight to black, but the HDMI-connected monitor shows "no signal" and then goes black, and when you go to sleep from sleep, the DP-connected monitor goes straight to black All windows in HDMI monitor moved to DP monitor when computer was woken up and the resolution was not normal. If my understanding is wrong, please correct me in the reply.



Based on the available information, the speculation is that when the system goes to sleep, your HDMI connected monitor will be directly disconnected, it is recommended that you turn off "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" by follow steps. "Win" + "X" > "Device Manager" > "Display Adapter", double click "Display Adapter" to expand the entry, you will see a list of your monitor device names, then select your external monitor device names(try both), right click > " Properties" > "Power Management" tab, then uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power", then press Enter to confirm.
